3 years later

Lucy sat at her desk in her WICKED uniform, her hair neatly pulled into a side braid. She wore minimal makeup, just blush and a layer of mascara on her long eyelashes. She watched the screen intently, more specifically she watched A5 or as he had called himself, Newt.

During his time in The Maze, he had gotten stronger, more muscly than he was when he was with Lucy. But the strength was strictly physical, 1 year after being sent there he had climbed the maze walls and jumped. What Newt didn't know was that Lucy had full control of The Maze and when she saw him begin his descent she placed a thick layer of ivy and made sure his ankle got caught in it. It was selfish, yes but Lucy wouldn't have been able to cope with him dying in there. According to her friends and brother, she hadn't coped well with him jumping in the first place, she hadn't coped with him leaving her at all.

Watching teenagers and children die because of something you made changes a person, at first it pained Lucy to watch as they screamed their last scream before they got ripped to shreds by a Greiver, as they went into The Maze and never came out. Over time she began to feel no emotion towards it. They had to be in there, the cure was the most important thing to her now, not any person's life. Not even hers.

Lucy barely spoke anymore, unless it was to Janson. After Newt went into The Maze she began isolating herself more and more. Eric and Thomas had tried to reach out to her, even Teresa had attempted to speak with her at one point because the boys thought maybe she wanted to talk to a girl.

Barely being able to speak to her not only had its effects on her but effects on Eric and Thomas, the boys had become a lot closer as a result.

"Morning, Lu," Thomas spoke as he sat in his desk chair that was next to Lucy's.

"Morning." She had stopped with his short-lived nickname a while ago but he refused to stop calling her by hers.

"You doing good?" He knew the answer he'd get, 'fine'. He started to do mental bets with himself of what she would say each morning, he simply had nothing better to do.

"Fine." She replied in a monotone, it was as if she had become a robot.

"Okayyyy." He dragged out and turned to face his screen.

"Miss Lucy to AD Jansons office, Miss Lucy to AD Jansons office." The lady over the loudspeaker repeated and the blue-eyed girl quickly got up from her seat and made her way to Jansons office. Thomas looked up to see Eric looking at him and he shrugged his shoulders.

"You wanted to see me." A small smile was painted on Lucy's lips as she strolled into his office.

"I did, I need to talk to you about something." He spoke calmly and gestured to the seat in front of his desk.

"What is it?" She asked as she folded her arms over chest.

" You're going to The Maze." The words struck deep into her heart as if she had just been stabbed with a thousand daggers.

"Wha- what? Why?" She questioned whilst raising her voice.

"We want to test the boy's reactions to you, you will be like you said when you first explained your idea for the trials, a variable." He managed to keep his voice monotone even though she was getting progressively angry with every word.
