My eyes snapped open as I heard the alarm on my bed begin to go off. I quickly shut the alarm off and glanced at the time. Today was the day... my twelfth birthday.
I groaned and sat up in my bed. Wooper opened his eyes and looked up at me. "Yeah buddy, I know you're tired. But we gotta get going. Silver wants me to be there for him to get his first Pokémon."
Wooper yawned and shook its head. "Oh come on! You're too lazy, Wooper." I told him, sliding off of the bed.
I threw off my pajama shirt and looked down at the scars running down from my lower collarbone all the way down to my ribs. Erratic marks from the Pokémon that had attacked me five years ago.
After I had been jumped by the Pokémon I woke up in a hospital in Violet City and spent two weeks recovering. I put on a black short-sleeved shirt and slipped on a crimson red hoodie which effectively covered the scars.
The doctors told me they were amazed that I was alive. The wounds weren't deep enough to jeopardize my life but it was close. And they had no idea what Pokémon had attacked me based on the description Silver and I gave.
I put on a pair of gold-colored shorts and some black sneakers as all of the events of the attack ran through my mind again. Day after day I could still remember the attack clearly.
I put my old golden and black cap on my head backward. Pushing most of my black hair through the hole of the hat. I glanced in the mirror in my room and made sure I looked good before I went to the door, grabbing Wooper's Poké Ball on the way out. "Wooper! C'mon!" My Pokémon begrudgingly stood up and followed after me on its stubby legs as I walked down the stairs of my house.
As I reached the bottom of the steps my mom glanced over at me from the couch in the living room. "Good morning Gold! Happy birthday!" My mom said, getting up and giving me a hug.
"Morning mom!" I said as she let me go. I walked to the kitchen and grabbed some bread from the counter. "Any word from dad?" I asked, placing the bread in my toaster.
My mom waited a minute too long to reply. "Well... no. I'm sorry honey. I don't think he'll be coming home for your birthday." She told me.
I felt my heart sink and turned away from my mom. "Oh. That's alright then. Silver and I are going to get Pokémon from the professor. I wonder who he'll pick." I said.
"Well, it's pretty exciting. Silver probably can't wait to get his first Pokémon." My mom said. "Y'know, I was quite a trainer back in the day. Your father and I met while traveling through Sinnoh."
"Oh, cool," I said. My heart began to beat slightly faster and silence befell us as I waited for my toast. Finally, it was ready so I grabbed the toast from the toaster and put it on a plate. I sat down at the table and began eating.
"So, do you think you'll travel with Silver after you get your Pokémon? My mom asked. "I know he's been waiting for you to turn twelve for the past few weeks." She added.
I shifted in my seat. "Well... I guess. If I'm going to go, I want to do it with my best friend." I answered, not looking up from my toast.
I quickly finished up and put the dish in the sink. "Alright, gotta run," I said, turning to the exit.
"Ok Gold, stay safe! And be sure to come back and show me your new Pokémon!" She called as I walked to the door.
