Magcargo seemed to be enjoying himself on the warm rocky field while Charizard flew in the air above him. "Charizard, use Thunder Punch!" Clair's Pokémon dove down and its arm began to spark with electric energy.

"Magcargo, dodge it and use Flamethrower!" My Pokémon ducked under the attack and blasted flames at Charizard. "Now, Body Slam!" Magcargo leaped up and rammed into Charizard.

The two Pokémon collided and Charizard fell over from the blow. Magcargo remained on top of Charizard and the giant lizard struggled to get up. "Use Dragon Tail!"

Clair's Pokémon slammed its tail onto the ground which propelled it and Magcargo into the air. "Steel Wing!" Her Pokémon's wings began to glow and Charizard struck Magcargo with them midair.

Magcargo landed on the ground looking a little worse for wear. "Magcargo, use Rollout!" The Fire and Rock Type retreated into its shell and began to spin.

"Counter with Thunder Punch!" Charizard put up its fists to block the spinning shell and managed to push Magcargo away. Magcargo stayed in his shell and went right back in.

This time he caught Clair and her Charizard off guard and landed a full power rock move. My Pokémon kept going, however, and sped into a rock into the grass field.

The rock stopped him in his tracks and he seemed mildly dazed by the collision. Clair seized the opportunity she saw. "Thunder Punch! Let's go!"

Charizard started running over to Magcargo on its two bulky legs. Why isn't it flying? I wondered. "Flamethrower!" Magcargo unleashed a barrage of flame in Charizard's direction.

"Block it with Steel Wing!" Clair commanded. Her Pokémon shoved its wings in front of its body and managed to deflect most of the attack. I got a good look at his wings and could tell that Magcargo's Rollout had damaged them. So he can't fly then!

Her fiery lizard Pokémon got in close and slugged Magcargo in the face with an electric fist. "Again!"

Charizard prepared to strike again while Magcargo was stuck between it and a boulder. "Get in your shell Magcargo!" I called. Magcargo retreated into his stone home which took the next attack.

Clair wasn't dissuaded by this, however. "Thunder Punch again! Keep up the pressure!" Charizard began rapidly slamming its fists into my Pokémon's shell.

He can't hold out for long in there. It's all or nothing then! I decided. "Magcargo, Rollout and Flamethrower! Go!" Magcargo began to spin in place as usual but this time his shell ignited with flames.

Charizard's attacks bounced harmlessly off of him as he leaped into the air and slammed into Charizard. The opposing Pokemon fell back and was finally defeated.

"Charizard can no longer battle, which means the winner is Magcargo!" The referee declared.

I could hardly believe it. I had taken the lead. Still, I couldn't afford to let my guard down against Clair.

Clair's next Pokémon appeared in the water section of the field. It was her Dragonair. The Pokémon had a slick blue body and a small horn on its head.

It was incredibly long and while it had no limbs the Pokémon was capable of dealing devastating blows as I had witnessed when it battled Crobat and Feraligatr.

Magcargo nodded at me and I figured now was as good a time to start as ever. "Magcargo, flamethrower!"

Magcargo sent the high-velocity flames at its target. "Dive underwater and then use Dragon Breath!" Dragonair easily dodged the fire move.
