Lifesaver

I'm not ready to drown again.

Loving her was like kissing water,
Transparent and clear,
Until it wasn't.

And the love went from luke-warm to cold,
Soft puddles into crashing waves,
And I didn't have time to resurface.

I'm not ready to have someone tell me how much they needed me to survive,
Because she used to be my water
And then I died.

I can't let myself absorb the water that is you,
Because I know you'll get nothing from me.

I'm sorry I played with your lifejacket,
But I couldn't live with myself
If I became the water
That drowns you.
