Kai's Pov
"You have to come back next june for the bon Jovi gig, its gonna be rad", the cute blonde gives me another bear hug. Although I wasn't into girls with sunshine inflamed hair, I'll admit she was quite a catch. Stefan certainly seemed to think so, too bad Lexi saw him as a younger brother. Poor guy, I made a mental note to give him some pointers on everything to do with girls and dating the next time I was around.
"You think I'd miss seeing the king of rock? Hell no, I think stefan might cry if his best friend doesn't show, speaking of-" I turn around to give my buddy a mocking wave goodbye. -"try not to miss me too much Salvatore ".
"I think I'll manage to survive without your sarcasm for another year Kai. Tell your sister I said goodluck with senior year", he patted my shoulder before I got into my car. I flash the pair a promising smile, see you next summer, I hope.
"Kai, everything okay?", the familiarity of her sweet voice pulled me out of my thoughts. That dream last night, brought back a memory I haven't had in years. Would I recognise the friends I would visit every summer up until my eighteenth year, I pondered the thought. Of course, they would have to be in their late thirties by now - or they might've moved to a different state, country for all I know.
"Yep, body full of slashed harvest girl magic, sitting in a rad car with a stunning woman, of course everythings okay", I reply nonchalantly while tuning the radio to a decent station. If it wasn't for Davina I wouldn't have been able to spell a memory loss hex on the car dealership owner for this beauty. Matte black range rover with tinted windows, and a built in stereo system. Thank you, 2015. Lyla tried to persuade me on the Bentley but, theres something appealing about driving a high leveled vehicle, not to mention the speed of the thing. Ergo, if we happen to run into trouble when returning to the familiar town of Mystic falls, we're in safe hands.
"You looked like you were a thousand miles away, if there ever is something you need to talk about, you know you can talk to me, right?", she continued fidgeting with the cap off a water bottle.
"Lyla, I'm good. Buuuut, I could do with a pit stop, I have a sudden craving for iced doughnuts. I think theres a service station three miles from us".
"You literally ate two plates of the hotel's breakfast buffet, how are you able to eat so much?". I couldn't control my laughing button when she got like this, so baffled at my food intake. Come on, its doughnuts. Only a crazy person would pass on the offer.
"To my defence, that was two hours ago", I pull over at the station, still chuckling at her judgement. She won't be so judgemental once she tastes an oreo cream doughnut.
"Okay, you were right, these are amazing ", the raven haired girl licks the excess icing from her finger.
"Told you, nothing beats doughnuts when you're peckish", I happily take another bite from my lemon meringue. I'll admit I was trying to distract my mind from the town on the horizon. Numerous emotions, no, difficult emotions were starting to affect my once sociopathic brain. I can't recall exactly when it happened, I just know it wasn't long after she came into my life unexpectedly. I gradually felt empathy the second time I locked her in the bedroom. However, the most striking moment was that night I brought her to the bridge by the waterfall - watching as she fell to the ground with grief, crying over her shitty family that abandoned her- that moment was when I knew. Lyla Tilbury caused me to experience guilt for the first time since...well, that's the million dollar question, I can't remember the last time I felt it.
Surprise, surprise, she noticed my crinkled forehead.
