The Sith stumbled back and fell over the edge of the pit, his body splitting in half as he fell. Gonk watched Darth Maul vanish into the darkness below then turned to see Obi-Wan holding Qui-Gon's limp shoulders.
"Master! Master!" the young Jedi cried.
"It is too late," Qui-Gon breathed.
"No!"
"Gonk," Gonk said, but Gonk's words went unheard by the Jedi.
"Obi-Wan promise - promise me you'll train the boy."
Obi-Wan sniffed. "Yes, Master."
"Gonk," Gonk said again.
"The chosen one ... must train ... bring balance." Qui-Gon became very still in Obi-Wan's arms as his padawan cradled him, crying quietly.
"Gonk," Gonk said, shuffling closer. Gonk dropped Obi-Wan's lightsaber and scooped over Qui-Gon. "Gonk."
"He's gone," Obi-Wan whispered. "I need a drink."
"Gonk. Gonk."
Finally, Obi-Wan looked at Gonk. "Force what?"
"Gonk."
"Healing?"
Gonk did Gonk's best to concentrate. Gonk was surprised no one had told Obi-Wan about Force Healing. He had been trained by Master Yoda, after all. Gonk had heard of the skill in the dusty world of Tatooine and had faith it was real.
Staring at the hole in Qui-Gon's chest, Gonk used the Force to patch the wound.
At once Qui-Gon sat up and took his lightsaber from the hands of his dazed padawan.
"Master!" Obi-Wan gasped. "You're alive again!"
"Gonk," Gonk cheered as Gonk had done something wonderful.
"I sense," Qui-Gon said as he glanced around. "Nothing. Come. Let's see if the queen and her people have sorted out this war. I have hopes everything has gone well - we have the chosen one on our side after all."
As they hurried out the hanger to the palace, Obi-Wan leaned in close to Gonk. "He was dead, wasn't he?" he asked.
"Gonk."
"I must admit even I am impressed. What else can you heal?"
"Gonk?"
"No, I'm not thinking of anything in particular. Well," Obi-Wan shrugged. "How about a hand? Could you heal one which had been cut off?"
"Gonk." Gonk did not know anyone missing a hand, but Gonk would be up to the challenge if it arose.
A large cruiser was parked in the courtyard of the palace. Supreme Chancellor Palpatine was speaking with the queen, while the Jedi Masters Yoda and Mace Windu were waiting for their fellows.
"Where's Annie?" Qui-Gon asked after greeting them.
"We don't want you to train him," Mace Windu said.
Much to Gonk's surprise, Qui-Gon nodded. "Don't worry. Anakin won't be trained by me."
Behind his master, Obi-Wan frowned. "Hang on a moment," he started.
Master Yoda, looking rather amused, pointed out Anakin amongst the crowd. "A bad feeling about this, I do have."
"Tell us of this Darth Maul. The queen mentioned he had a Sith look about him," Master Windu said.
Qui-Gon glanced at his padawan then at Gonk. "How about I tell you of a bigger fish. Our little Gonk here is quite the fighter."
Gonk hopped from one foot to another. "Gonk!" Gonk cheered. Gonk had a lot to tell the Jedi Masters about his friends too.
