New Beginnings

Sunlight is flooded through the room when I finally crack my eyes open.  Ugh, I know I've got this fancy daylight ring and all of that, but honestly I still hate the sun.  I've always hated it really.  The indoors have been my sanctuary even before becoming a vampire.

Once my eyes finally adjust to the extreme amount of light, I look over at my hand lazily sprawled out over the bed with my ring on it.  I was never sure what kind of stone the witch put in it before she made the spell to protect me from sunlight by wearing it, but one thing I know for sure is that the damn thing is bulky as hell.  My long, bony fingers looked like tooth picks with this thing on.  I guess it doesn't really matter though, considering wearing it allows me to actually be able to walk in the sun light.  I may not necessarily love the sun, but when I first turned and had to spend three months inside of buildings, only being able to come out a night, I got pretty depressed.

Luckily Maggie came and helped me with that.  She'd been a waitress at a bar one night and saw me sloutched over the counter.  The minute she looked into my ruby red eyes, she gave me a knowing, hard look and told me to follow her.  Of course I was confused as hell, but what did I have to lose?

She took me to the back of the bar into this tiny room with jars full of herbs and big bulky books that looked about a thousand years old and told me to sit down.  I'd obeyed but of course I asked her why I was there.  She'd simply just replied with a, "I'm here to help you.  You don't seem like you would be a trouble maker, plus you look like you're about to jump off of a bridge if you don't get out and see the light.  By the looks of you, you don't seem very old either."

We sat there and talked about how I was turned and what I'd been doing since then; basically what I drank and if I ate people.  I told her that I did, but that I never killed them.  Back then I actually used to care about how people felt, so I wouldn't kill them, I'd just drink and then leave them there and call for the police then run.  Probably not the smartest idea, but hey it got me here and now I have a daylight ring.

Out of nowhere, Shaun's voice sounds out, instantly snapping me out of my thoughts.  "Hey, Dan, are you awake?"

I let out a silent sigh and look up at the ceiling for a few seconds before hopping out of the bed and heading towards the door.  The coldness of the air in the house instantly colliding with my bare chest.   Luckily for me, I actually wear sweat pants when I sleep even if I don't wear a shirt.  "Yeah, i'm coming."

When I get to the door, i crack it open just enough so that I can see Shaun face to face with me.  "Do you mind if I come in?"  He presses his lips together awkwardly making me wonder how he could even be in his late thirties.  He's acting like an awkward teenager.

"Yeah, of course.  Come on in.  It is your house anyways."  I chuckle and move out of the way so that he can come through.  "Did you need something?"  I try to make it sound completely not rude, considering most of the time when people say it they're saying it to be rude.

Shaun just looks back over at me with another small smile.  "Yeah, I just wanted to ask you something really weird.  Just try not to think badly of me or anything its just.."  He pauses for a second seemingly to sort his thoughts before speaking up again.  "Its just, Phil.  He doesn't get out much anymore.  I've been trying to get him to go to a movie or make some friends, but he just keeps saying that he's busy with stuff from school and refuses to go."

What exactly is it he's getting at?  Does he just want to talk to somebody about Phil?  Maybe he wants to ask if its just a phase or something.

"All of that aside,"  he continues.  "I just was  wondering if you'd want to take him somewhere today.  Like, I don't know, the park or something.  Just to give him somebody to talk to you know?"  He runs a hand through his hair before sighing loudly and looking back down to the ground.
