I stood on top of the wall and stared at the sky. Today was the day. We were supposed to take Wall Maria back. I believed we could do it, but I just had this looming feeling hanging over me. I took a deep breath and looked around at everyone. They had so much resolve and I respected them all for it. I was knocked out of my senses when I heard cheering from down below. I walked towards the crowd of scouts looking down at the citizens cheering for us to come back safely. That was one hell of a switch from how things had been before. It took them this long and a coup for people to start having faith in the scouts again... if they ever did in the first place. I held my necklace with the scout emblem on and smiled. Having others believe in us made the worrying feeling get quieter. It didn't go away of course, but I felt a little more confident in all of our abilities now. I laughed at Jean, Connie, and Sasha yelling back as I made my way over to the edge where everyone was looking. I jumped when Erwin started yelling as soon as I made my way over to Levi, Hange, and him. Levi grabbed my hand and squeezed it reassuringly. I smiled as the people cheered for us. Erwin sent us off on our horses and we charged. Night fell and we walked with our horses in the dark. The quiet was almost overwhelming. I sighed as someone tripped and made a loud noise, it semi-broke me out of my thoughts. Levi warned them to be careful and watch where they were stepping. I just stared at Calamity and wondered if she was tired too. I had a shit sleep schedule, but being awake during the dawn was not helping my tiredness. Levi looked fine though. After all, he once told me he gets like an average of three hours of sleep each night. Could explain why he was very cranky with people, now that I thought of it. Well, other than his natural distaste for people in general.
Jean noticed a sleeping titan and I went back into my natural state of spacing out when Hange and Eren started talking about how close we were to the titan. Eventually, we made it to the outskirts of Wall Maria. It was beautiful in person despite the wrecked buildings. We rode on our horses as we got closer to begin the operation. As Erwin yelled our instructions, I had to wonder how he was going to use the 3D maneuvering gear. He was disabled now and I couldn't quite wrap my head around the idea of him flying through the air when the 3DMG was more for abled people. I was proud of him, for sure, but I worried about his safety. He had become like a big brother to me. I worried for everyone, but those closest to me, they each had a special spot in my anxiety-ridden head, worrying all about them. I stood on top of Calamity's back and said a silent hope that she and all my friends would be okay. With that, I jumped and was flying through the air to get on top of Wall Maria. As I ran, I saw Shiganshina and immediately thought of the first episode. We were really going to do it. I smiled as I sprinted harder across the wall. I jumped down the outside of the wall surrounding Shiganshina. As Hange shot her green flare-up down the way, so did I. There was no immediate danger. It felt off though. I watched as Eren transformed and hardened himself to fill the hole in the wall. It looked sealed from where I was looking and both men in charge of inspecting it had agreed. We really did it... I held my breath though. This was Isayama's writing. He was not going to make it easy for us. I flew to the top of the wall and started to follow Hange to the next point. I saw Armin investigating something though and went off plan. I followed him up the wall and heard him and Erwin talking. I sighed a breath of relief that Erwin made it onto the wall okay. Being the nosy person I was, I only started to leave after I knew what was going on. I had my guard up even more and started to run and was about to jump to catch up to Hange, Eren, Levi, and Mikasa.
Erwin called out to me before I could though and put me personally in charge of guarding Armin. I knew Armin could handle himself, but he wasn't very physically strong so I understood the order, but I also had other duties I was supposed to attend to. I was about to say this to Erwin, but he nodded as if to acknowledge my thoughts, sending a different scout ahead to report the change of plans, probably to let Hange and Levi know. I had a feeling Erwin knew what he was doing though, even with all the unease. I fell in line with the group of people assigned to listen to Armin's commands. Someday, that kid would become a great commander, I just knew it. He looked terrified, but I knew he could do it. It took all I could not to laugh when he finished his orders and asked the soldiers if the plan was okay with them. They ran off, no questions and I patted Armin's back. He flinched and I explained that I was going to be his right hand during this investigation. He explained what I was to do if we found any evidence and I smiled, "We'll make a commander out of you yet." Armin chuckled awkwardly and I snickered. We set off to search for the enemy. They didn't even deserve names in my eyes anymore. Those traitorous bastards didn't deserve the headspace they took up in my mind. If I was a computer, I'd just delete their names. A nameless enemy is so much easier to face, they don't have families or backstories that we know of. I continued searching houses, making sure to keep close to Armin at all times. He was smart, he'd figure this out somehow. I looked at his panicked face as I thought of all the ways I wanted to make the enemy pay. My thoughts softened and I landed next to him. "No reports of any activity within the buildings." I smiled sympathetically, "Take a deep breath, Armin. Crowding your brilliant mind with worries is only going to make the situation worse. Just look at the sky and take a deep breath..." He took a deep breath and almost instantly jumped like he had a light bulb moment. He ordered us to look for cracks and crevices in the wall. "The titans in the walls..." "Exactly, we need to find a small area that may be covered, somewhere one could easily hide!" A guy grabbed Armin and started yelling about his hunch. I grabbed his arms off of Armin and shoved the guy back to get in between and Sparta kicked the guy back onto his ass. "Don't touch him! You wouldn't do this to Erwin, would you? Now give Armin the respect he deserves!" Armin nodded as if to thank me and continued explaining Erwin also nodded at me as if to tell me I wasn't in trouble for the probably unnecessary roughness. Erwin then halted the mission with his flare and we immediately started searching the surface of the walls as Armin suggested and then commanded. I smiled with pride at the kid before I went off to do as he said.
