Damon's POV

I jerk my head when I hear a new voice. A doctor maybe in his forties walks out of the ICU wearing a white coat. I stand up instinctively and Hazel rushes to my side. "The patient has regained consciousness. You can see him now." He said to no one in particular. "But not for long." He added quickly. Hazel instantly rushed towards the door almost before the doctor could finish his words and I follow her after giving the doctor a nod.

She walks into the door and her steps falter as soon as she sees the figure lying on the bed. He looks young, probably in his mid twenties, though I know his exact age. He has sandy brown hair which is cropped short and fair smooth skin.

I recognize him from the pictures I've seen before. He doesn't look as glamorous right now as he did in the photos. Nevertheless he still looks good even in a patient's gown. His eyes are closed at the moment and he seems oblivious of our presence.

Hazel approaches him with slow careful strides whereas I stop at the doorway, leaning on the frame of the door, not wanting to interrupt their moment. She plops on the chair next to the bed making a creak sound which brings about a response in Aiden.

"Hazel?" He opens his eyes but shuts them instantly probably blinded by the lights.

"Hey!" He says in a low voice with a faint smile on his lips. "Hey!" Hazel replied with a smile of her own, her voice had a mixture of sadness and weakness.

"Missed me?" He asks and Hazel lets out a small chuckle as she blinked away a tear.

There was silence for a few seconds then he spoke again, "I knew you'd be the first person I'd see when I open my eyes."

Hazel shook her head roughly, "Technically speaking, the first person you saw was the doctor." She said rather flatly and I almost rolled my eyes.

This made Aiden respond with something that sounded either like a chuckle or a scoff, I couldn't exactly pinpoint. "Same old Hazel." He murmured.

She gently picked up his listless wrist clutching it with both her hands and pressed her lips on his knuckles, planting a soft kiss.

I stare at her soft hands which held Aiden's in amazement. Since the time I started my job, I have never really seen Hazel being close to any of her family members. Which almost made it seem like she's incapable of loving and caring for someone.

The room was quiet for a while, before she spoke, "Why?" This time, there was a crack in her voice.

"Just why?" she repeated no louder than before.

Aiden sighed vividly. "We have talked about this Hazel." He said in a tired voice.

She did not answer instead she stared at him for a moment with glistened, glassy eyes. I don't think I know what they are talking about. But they seem to have an understanding of their own.

They held each other's eyes for a few more seconds before Hazel dropped her gaze with a huff. They stayed like that for a while more after which, a doctor comes up and I let him in. "You should leave the patient now. He needs rest." He says so and Hazel nods her head after a moment of thought.

She slowly puts down Aiden's hand back to where it was. "We aren't done yet, we'll talk about this later." She says getting off her chair.

Aiden let out a breath which sounded like a groan. "I just got shot... Cut me some slack."

Which to his disadvantage, did not work as it just made Hazel narrow her eyes at him.

"Fine." He murmured reluctantly.
