Both of them stood, lost in their thoughts of the other, welcoming the embrace, until voices in the hall shook them back.
She was the first to react, stepping away, guilt plain on her face, wrapping her arms around herself, now cold from the loss of him.
He stood there and tried desperately to think. He raised one hand to rub the back of his neck.
He began to pace the room; unaware he was doing so.
She watched him, now worried about what the file said, about why he was reacting this way.
“Maybe….maybe I should go,” she said quietly.
“NO!” he even startled himself at how loud the word tumbled from him.
“No,” he said more quietly,” no…Please…I just need a minute. I need to….”He fell quiet and continued to pace, tugging at his hair, mumbling beneath his breath.
“I just need… I just n n need to find a way to ask you out,” he said to her. With that statement, a perplexed smile crossed her face. She was unsure about what was happening.
Was he asking her out? Did he want to ask or was there someone forcing him.
The smile faded as it occurred to her that Jin was forcing him to ask.
“Jungkook,” she softly called, trying to break into his one-sided conversation.
“Jungkook,” she tried again.
He turned to her then and said “I need to ask you to the Gala…” he cocked his head and looked so adorably confused. She thought how cute he was and how hard he was working out the problem in his head.
She smiled at him and he grabbed her hand like a lifeline.
“Right?” he asked for her agreement. She gave him an amused nod.
“Right,” he confirmed. “I mean I have thought about this a lot.”
Her heart was pounding. He was so very serious and so very cute standing there; she was trying hard to make sure she was understanding him correctly.
“So….” suddenly he seemed to have reached a decision. He squared his shoulder and moved to stand in front of her, causing her to have to tip her chin to look up at him.
He stood, looking at her, seeing calm assurance in her eyes.
Drawing a deep breath, he simply asked, “I want you to be with me ….ok?”
He winced as the words left his mouth. How stupid he must have sounded. He truthfully never really had to ask women out, they usually asked him or just invited themselves – along for dinner, out for drinks, into his bed.
He could not remember the last time, or if ever, he had asked someone out and been this anxious for them to agree.
Lyra was stuck by his question. She was focused on him alone. It did not matter that his request was strangely worded or that she heard much more than an invitation to a dinner meeting. She knew what he meant.
“Yes,” she whispered. He bent his head closer to make sure he heard her correctly.
His mouth was so close to hers. She looked at his eyes, then dropped her glance to his mouth. He was so close she felt his breathing become harsher.
He watched her gaze drop from his eyes to his lips. He saw her eyes darken in a way that had him responding to her almost immediately. She reached a hand to stroke his hair and tuck the long strands behind his ear.
He closed his eyes and thought that cool touch might calm the emotions rioting in him.
No one had ever taken the time to learn that gentle hands in his hair was a sure way to calm and relax him.
He drew a harsh breath. He was wrong. Her hands touching him only made him think of crushing her close and taking her sweet mouth in his.
He forced himself to calm those thoughts before he looked at her.
She acted on impulse to touch him, her hands going to touch the long dark curls that touched his collar. She brushed it back like she had longed to do since the first day they met. She watched his face, expressive even with his eyes closed.
He stood still a moment, then nuzzled his head into her hand like an old cat. He liked this; she tucked that information away for later.
She smiled as she admired his long dark lashes brushing his skin, now tinted pink by the heat rising between them. He was fascinating to watch and she was taking in every move, admiring the beauty of his face.
She was so absorbed in watching him that she was startled when his eyes opened. The tension was broken as they both broke into nervous laughter, stepping away from each other.
“The Gala?” she asked, her head clearing enough to remember her task at hand.
“Yes,” he confirmed, handing her his phone “Please put in your information. We'll plan it later if that’s ok.”
She nodded her head and smiled as she entered her number into his phone.None of this seemed real. She was afraid she would soon wake to find this was all a dream.
Loud voices in the hall intruded again. This was real.
Before she could say or do anything else, his phone rang.
“I am so sorry…” he stated.
“No…no…of, course I understand. I need to get back too,” she said.
He brushed past her and opened the door, stepping out first and making sure the hall was clear then moved to let her pass. His smile was wide and full, his eyes were actually twinkling as he watched her step past.
“I can’t wait,” he whispered and she stumbled as his low voice reached her.
She caught herself just in time and fought a nervous giggle. Once he saw she was ok he laughed with her.
Footsteps and voices alerted them to others on the hallway. She waved to him and turned to leave.
He watched her until she turned the corner, already anticipating the next time he would be alone with her. His concentration was shot for the afternoon.
