Tae returned to the control room while the lovers collected themselves.
Jungkook held Lyra until she was no longer trembling. He kissed her gently, then after he was sure she was ok he asked her to wait in his office while they tied things up. He heard Dae beside him and realized Jin had asked her to do the same.
Dae slipped her arm through Lyra's and led her in the direction of the security suite.
“Let's go,” she said to the younger girl, “I bet we can find where he hides the good stuff.”
Twin choruses of “Don’t drink without me!” rang out behind them. They giggled and waved over their heads. Damn it felt good to be free!
Jungkook and Jin stood in silence for several minutes, thinking about what had just happened, what could have gone wrong, giving thanks that things hadn’t.
Taehyung came and broke into their thoughts, telling them everyone else had gone home and all the video and audio equipment had been dismantled.
They were alone, the three of them, free to talk. And they did. They reviewed what had happened and what would probably happen next. They spent the better part of an hour writing statements while everything was fresh, tying up all loose ends and planning what steps to take next.
When they were all satisfied they called it over. They shook hands and hugged and congratulated and thanked each other. They were ready to leave. As they waited for the elevator Taehyung put his hand on JK's shoulder and squeezed.
He gave the younger man his most lethal smile and said. “I love you brother. But if you ever agree to another threesome without asking me first, I'll kick your ass!”
Just then the elevator doors opened and he glided in, one hand in his pocket, looking like he was taking a turn on the runway and winked as the doors closed.
JK was too slow to react, yelling “Hey! Get back here!” to the closing door. Then he turned to find Jin holding his sides in laughter. He shook his head, but stifled a laugh of his own.
As the elevator arrived to take them to Jungkook’s office, they both sighed a deep sigh of relief. They were content with their own thoughts as the elevator lifted them away.
SongDae and Lyra had arrived at JK's office immediately after leaving the men. The place was quiet then, the team having been given the rest of the day off in recognition of the hard work they had all done.
Dae looked in the staff fridge and snagged both of them a soft drink. She sat down on one of the chairs and invited Lyra to do the same.
She could tell that the adrenaline was beginning to wear off for the younger girl. She had her talking for the first half hour, but as the numb wore off she would tell that Lyra was struggling.
“Dae,” she finally said, “I am sorry, but I…..I need just a few minutes alone.”
Dae stopped her when she would have said more. “I understand. I think I need to spend some time with my thoughts too. Take your time.”
With that Lyra wandered the office until she found JK's private bathroom suite. It was huge with mirrors at the counter with a chair in one corner. She sank into the chair and just stared. This bathroom was bigger than her entire apartment.
She sat and thought about the tiny apartment where she was always cold and never had enough to eat and constantly worried that someone would hurt her or those she loved.
And the tears began to silently flow. She cried for the child who lost her mother and the silly girl who was foolish enough to leave for the city to chase her dreams.
She cried for the girl who worked so hard to train for things she loved, just for those talents to be twisted into her worst nightmare.
She cried for the girl who thought a successful businesswoman like Alex Choi would actually care to help her, and then for the betrayal of that trust.
Then she cried for the girl who bumped into a beautiful dark-haired boy outside the elevator, hiding herself from him, even from the hope of him.
Then she realized that that story had turned and was still being written. He did not use her then discard her like everyone else had. He had protected her and fought for her. He had cherished her and made her feel safe.
The last bout of tears was cleansing as she realized all those losses had to happen to take her where she was today.
Each time she was torn down she was built back stronger. Each setback worked to bring her where she was today. To the place where she stood up to the woman who tried to destroy her, even if it was in the tiniest way.
Then she remembered the feeling of Jungkook literally at her back, warming her, sheltering her, giving her his strength.
THAT was her way forward, not alone, not impoverished, not afraid. She would find a new Min Lyra now; she had the courage to do that.
She drew shuddering breaths until the tears slowed to a trickle. She heard deep voices in the outer office and knew the men must have arrived
