Lyra was cautious in the coming weeks.
She could too easily have feelings for JungKook. She felt herself freer, lighter around him and that was dangerous.
So, she avoided him, never going into the employee break room, always eating lunch in the tiny room off her office.
She grew even more isolated and lonely.
JK on the other hand grew more determined to see her, to find out more about her. He tried looking for her in all the obvious places, but she was nowhere to be found.
He remembered Jin's advice to ask her out. But then the government contract was implemented full scale and the possible security risks drastically increased.
At the same time, his attempts to find more about Lyra's background, past employment, school, all came up vague or missing. It left JK uneasy.
Those thoughts nagged at him more frequently as they approached the date of the Design Gala. He hated riddles and Lyra’s past was turning out to be just that.
Jin asked about Lyra each time they met. JK would share the slivers of information he had gleaned.
Jin would share new bits of concerns he would have. It was frustrating as hell.
Most conversations ended with “Ask her out!”. It was clear Jin supported his authentic interest in the girl. It was equally clear he saw no harm in JK using any information he might find.
JK remained resistant. Part of that seemed wrong to him.
Each year all the employees were treated to a night out at the Gala. Some might think it a boring social event, but all of JK's friends went and made the night their own!!
Some of the past Galas were epic! He laughed at the memories.
Everyone was expected to have a date. Most years he and Taehyung, his counterpart at iNovis, went stag, preferring to select from the beautiful women crowding the event center.
It was a sport to them and they were damn good at it.
He had not talked to Tae about dates this year. Lately he had been thinking about the party, the fancy clothes, the gleaming candles, delicious food and the dancing afterward.
He found himself wishing to share that with a special person. What would it be like to anticipate the night with someone in mind?
His thoughts immediately went to Lyra.
He would choose his clothes with care for her, agonize over what flowers to send her, worry about picking her up, dream about taking her home. He wanted all of that!
Still he hesitated.
It had been a long time since he focused on one woman that way, and that turned out to be a disaster!
And he was also concerned that the corner of his mind that was the investigator would not shut off and allow him to simply be on a date with a beautiful woman. So, he did nothing.
Lyra had been swamped at work. She was slowly gaining skill and confidence in her work and it seemed Mr. Kim had noticed.
He gave her more and varied assignments and she bloomed under the responsibilities. She allowed herself to relax and feel a sense of pride in her accomplishments.
She had the Design Gala on Jin's calendar, but she thought it was only for him and his management team.
