She slipped into the big bed and immediately fell into exhausted sleep. It was late the next morning when she stumbled into the kitchen of the apartment. The late morning sun streamed through the tall windows as she looked for JK.
The apartment was quiet and still. There was no hint of his mischievous humor, no whisper of his masculine presence. The place was empty.
She walked into the kitchen, the large bouquet of fresh flowers catching her eyes and bringing memories she pushed away.
She also found a note and as she lifted it a new phone.
Curious, she opened the note. It was straightforward.
Lyra, I will keep your phone with me. We are monitoring it. This phone is yours to use. If you need me, call.
She sat and stared at the note.
He had her phone and all the information in it. If any of the threatening texts or emails came in, he would see them.
He would also be combing through her personal information. She felt fear and anger and confusion. He could have at least asked her permission.
The rest of the day passed slowly, the night even more so. JK did not call or return home that night.
The next day passed the same. Several times she thought to text him, but she just couldn’t find any way to start the conversation.
The following days settled into a pattern. If JK was home they passed each other in the hall. The most common phrase became “excuse me".
If he needed to give her information it was done in a note or a text. Instead of becoming more comfortable the longer they stayed there, every day became more tense.
Jungkook had spent hours reviewing the information in stacks and discs all over his office. He had to confront Lyra. He had given her all the time he could.
He sent her a text to say he would be home early and that he would bring takeout. She did not respond.
He mentally rehearsed how he hoped his talk with Lyra would go. The company was really struggling and he needed to clear things up.
He could tell that the uncertainty and isolation were taking a toll on Lyra, not that she would ever admit it to him.
He had intercepted several emails and texts that caught his attention. They appeared to be from different individuals but they were never signed and there was no real indication who they were from.
He could not pinpoint a consistent source or a connection between them. They were strange, but not exactly threatening, although he thought they would be disturbing to her. It was past time to settle this.
