She saw him struggling with what to say to her, saw him brace himself for her reaction.
She braced herself as well. She stood stock still, fearing what he was preparing to say.
“Lyra,” he paused, cursing himself to just get it over with.
” Lyra…..I am the head of security here. I have been for years. To prepare for the government contract I….pretended to work in the accounting department.”
He began to rush his words as he saw comprehension dawn. She began to pull away from him.
“We followed the encryptions to this office…but I ….” She did not allow him to finished as she violently pulled away from him, jerking her hands from his grip.
“You lied to me….” Her voice barely a whisper, " you lied to me and used me for information.”
She saw the flare in his eyes as that remark hit too close to home.
“It was all a lie.” Dozens of memories flashed and she began to question every one of them.
She stood, her arms wrapped tightly around herself, giving herself the comfort that ten minutes ago she would have practically begged from him. Now it felt like this pathetic attempt at self-soothing was the only thing that was keeping her from flying apart.
“It was ALL a lie,” she reasoned out loud,” every kiss, every laugh, every whispered word or sigh, every touch. Dear God I almost…...”
Jungkook had to do something, say something, anything. He felt like he was watching her fragile heart shatter at his feet.
“No…Lyra..” He reached for her, wanting to pull her close, wanting to comfort her, reassure her. But she stepped away, holding out one trembling hand to keep him away.
“No Lyra, no, please. It was not a lie. It was all real. I believe you. I am going to help you,” he tried to explain.
His heart dropped. She stood there staring at him, her face a blank, unaware of the silent tears streaming down her face.
She shut her eyes and drew a shuddering breath and when she looked at him again, he saw a stranger there.
She had completely shut down. He could no longer see any emotion in her. She had completely surrendered the fight.
“Lyra, baby…don’t do this….we are going to work this out together,” he promised.
Other than the tiniest flinch at his use of the endearment, she had no response.
“What will happen to me now?” she asked, her tone flat and emotionless.
“The authorities have been alerted and are waiting downstairs.” He did not miss her sharp intake of breath at that.
