A/N:
This chapter, although only one scene, is hands-down the most important thus far in discussing plot. We find out some incredibly important information about Enjolras and the events to come. Enjoy, let me know what you think!
And now let us travel back to where Marius is taking Avenir to see Lamarque...
~Vive La France~
I paled, stopping just outside the doors of what must have been a hospital. "Lamarque? I –"
"Avenir, he has cholera, it's highly contagious, we have to be quick about it," said Marius, looking back at me.
I had to hurry to catch up with Marius, who was already inside the hospital, no doubt desperate to hear Lamarque's opinion of me.
This was bad...
I was wearing the same tattered dress I wore when I met him at the first barricade. What would Lamarque think? This could turn into a mess...
We traveled down some elaborate hallways, lit by numerous lanterns. Lamarque's room was at the very end of the hallway. I was so nervous I was starting to shake. I reached my hand into my satchel and fingered my half of the artifact as a nervous habit. Marius heard the noise, and glanced down. His head snapped up at me. "Right, right, ok, ok," I said. "Don't worry, I won't wish for anything. No more little accidents."
"Little," he scoffed, then turned to speak to the soldier guarding the door. "Hi. Me again. This time, we need some privacy." The soldier saluted, then left.
"Huh, Marius, got some face recognition around here!"
"Shhhh!"
We were in the room.
Marius rushed over to his hero. "General, I need you to meet someone."
Silence.
"Umm, ahhhh...she's quite the activist. She has an acquaintance with Enjolras, seemingly very much so. But...I, ahhh... I don't know about it, so..."
No response from Lamarque.
Marius gave up. He looked over to me. "I see him breathing...can you do something, and quickly? I don't want to get sick -"
"Don't be such a Jolllllllly, Marius, we'll be fine."
Marius stared.
"Oh come on, I know how Joly is about germs." His jaw dropped open. Ignoring Marius's gawking, I slowly walked across the room to this amazing man – he was the one who had inspired Enjolras, who, in turn, had inspired me. I owed so much to this man.
