Time passed quickly, and it was finally sunset.

After we surveyed our view from the top of the barricade, we practiced which positions we would be firing from come nightfall.

Enjolras and I had previously discussed that he would not ask for volunteers to report on the strength of the foe, since we knew Javert would volunteer, and we still couldn't fully trust him.  I kept a close eye on Javert, who was quietly helping to reinforce the barricade.

As the sun began to set, I walked over to him.  "Inspector," I said.

"What is it, girl?"

"I'm going to ask.  Why are you really here?  Soult sent you here, right?  Who's to say you aren't here to stab us in the back?"

Enjolras overheard me say this and walked over to listen.

"Yes, he's getting upset with Jacques, your father," he said, now speaking to Enjolras.  "Angry that your father can't find you.  He wanted me to search the barricades, see if you were there.  He offered me the position of your father if I turned you in."

"Then why haven't you?  You've wanted that position your whole life!  Why have you helped us so far?  Why did you let us steal all the ammunition?  That doesn't leave anything in it for you..."

"Shhh.  Listen," said Enjolras.

He said this in his normal voice, but everyone heard and quickly quieted down.

Thump.  Thump.  Thump.  Thump.

The sound of approaching soldiers on foot.

I looked at Javert, his eyes full of conflict

I looked at Javert, his eyes full of conflict.

"How could you," I hissed.  "I trusted you."

The amis realized what was happening and quickly spoke up.

"Why didn't you turn us in earlier, old man?!"

"After all of those raids, it comes down to this?

"That's the last time we show you any mercy!"

Javert backed up, scared, but he was feigning - he quickly lashed out with his police baton, striking Bossuet, who yelped in pain.  Enjolras and Courfeyrac rushed forward, and Enjolras wrestled his baton out of his arms, but not before Javert punched him in the jaw.

"NO!" I screamed, and charged Javert, but Grantaire beat me to him, throwing his full body weight on top of Javert and twisting his wrist.

Enjolras quickly recovered and threw himself around Javert, knocking him to the ground.
