INDIANA II JJ Maybank (Outerbanks)

chapter eleven

JJ felt guilty as he had told Indiana that she was overreacting over a compass, but now fully understood why she had. They had just found her fathers compass in Scooter Grubs ship wreck.

After finding her fathers compass, Indi just wanted to be left alone to sort all her feelings out. Her first instinct was to lock herself into her room but then realized that wouldn't be the best idea. Her brother would probably just knock on her door until she would open it to force her to talk to him.

So she went where she always went when she wanted to be alone. The one place she hadn't told anyone about. She took her skateboard and took off, after leaving a note to her brother to not worry about her.

She skated along the road down further into the cut as she came to the small pathway that led into the forest. She took her board into the hands and started walking into the forest.

The sun was still out but would soon go down. After some walking she finally arrived. Her favorite place. The only place in the world where she felt like she could let all her thoughts be heard. 

She sat down in the grass, playing with some halms as she was looking at the lake in front of her. The sun was reflecting on the water and gave off beautiful colors. 

She sat there and thought about her fathers compass. Why would Scooter Grubs have it? Does this mean he is still alive? Why where these men after the compass?

She was so deep in her thoughts, she didn't even hear the footsteps that had been nearing her. She only noticed the presence as it sat down into the grass next to her.

She looked up at the boy sitting next to her.

"JJ?" She asked the blonde haired boy, "What are you doing here?" 

"I knew you would be here, so I wanted to see if you're fine." JJ replied. He wanted her to look at him but she was just starring at the lake in front of them.

"Did John B send you to take care of me?" Indi asked, wondering if her brother knew about her secret place.

"No." He said.

"How did you know where to find me?" She asked him, curious on how he found her.

"Inds, I know that you come here whenever you are upset and need space." He replied, gently putting his hand on hers, which was resting on her thigh.

Indiana wanted to know how he knew about her place but was too tired to argue. So instead she just leaned her head on his shoulder and they both enjoyed the silence while the sun went down.

"Can you stay here with me tonight?" Indi asked after a while.

"Anything for you." JJ said while rubbing her back.

Summer nights in the Outer Banks were warm so they weren't freezing during the night. They laid there in the grass, JJ had his arms wrapped around her as she had her head on his chest.

They fell asleep like that and woke up in the same position the next morning. They made their way back to the Chateau knowing they couldn't stay there forever hiding from everything that was cruel in the world.

On the door of the Chateau was a note from DCS. 

"Come on, let's play a prank on John B." JJ said to Indi with a grin.

"What?"

"DCS! I know you're in there!" JJ shouted as he banged on the window, making John B startle on the coach.

"JJ!" She tried to scold him, but was failing hard at surpressing her laugh from her brothers face.

"You should have seen your face, it was like..." JJ laughed at John B.
