INDIANA II JJ Maybank (Outerbanks)

chapter sixteen

After Indi and John B had found out together what the message in the compass really meant, they got into the van and picked up Pope and JJ.

They went to the Wreck now to pick up Kiara. Pope went inside to tell her to come. After some minutes he comes back but nobody is following him.

"She says she's not coming." Pope says as he got into the back of the van.

"Shit." John B muttered from the front seat. Indi widened her eyes at him.

"What did you do, asshat?" She asked him.

"Hang on. I'll deal with it." He said and got out of the van to get Kiara.

He came back out of the Wreck but unlike Pope he had Kie following him. They got back into the car and started to take off.

"You mind if I just relax on this one? It's been a long day and a lot of shit has gone down. I'm just gonna lay low." JJ said. "Oh did you want a hit of this?" He asked as he held out his blunt to Pope.

"I keep the signal clear." Pope refused JJ's offer.

"What about you princess, you want to smoke this weed now?" He turned to Indiana.

"No, let's do it tomorrow, I'll also keep the signal clear." She laughed and sent Pope a wink.

"Dude, okay but do you understand that your problem is that you don't get creative, if you got creative." JJ started as he pointed at Pope.

"Look, I know I was wrong about the lighthouse okay?" John B interrupted their conversation. "And wrong about everything else going on. But I was right on one thing." 

"And that is?"

"Our dad is trying to tell us something. Me and Indi figured it out together." He pulled up to the graveyard.

"Awesome the graveyard, this is my favorite place." Indi sarcastically said.

They all got out of the van.

"John B what are we doing?" Kie asked him as they were following him through the graveyard.

"You know how you're trying to remember a song and can't remember who sings it?" He asked her.

"Yeah." 

"So Redfield, this whole entire time I thought it was a place." He stopped in front of a tomb. "It's a person."

"Voi-effing-la." JJ stated.

"See, our great-great grandmother Olivia Redfield. That was her maiden name." John B said turning to them. "Help me with the door." He said before him and Pope went over to the door.

"One, two, three. Are you pushing?" Pope asked as the both of them tried to open the door.

"Yeah I'm pushing." John B replied. 

JJ went over to them to help them with the door. "Hold on, I got this."

"Come on, this door is like 700 pounds it's not gonna budge." Pope said.

"We didn't come this far to get this far alright." JJ said not losing hope to get the door open.

There was a hiss coming from the tomb and a snake came out. Out of instinct Indi stepped back, trying to not get bitten by a snake today.

"That's a moccasin alright. Ye olde Dr. cottonmouth." JJ said as he also stepped away from the tomb. "Death in tall grass." He started barking at the snake.

"JJ! Stop it!" Indi slapped his arm.

"You're gonna wake the freaking dead man." Pope said to him.

"They're afraid of dogs." JJ defended himself. "Everyone knows that man. Wait hold on."

"What?" John B asked him.

"If there's one, there's probably dozens. All around." JJ finished.

"Stop, you're scaring me." Kiara told him and he started barking at the tomb as if he could scare all the snakes away.

"Seriously stop it." Indi scolded him and dragged him away from barking at the wall.

"Look, John we're not gonna get in there alright? It's not budging. We should probably just go." Pope told him.

"Indiana could get through." Kie said as she pointed the light off her flashlight at a hole in the crypt door.

"What?" JJ and Indi asked her at the same time.

"No, no, you think she's gonna fit through the hole? That hole?" John B asked her.

"She's the smallest." Kie shrugged.

"No, she's not gonna climb through that hole." JJ said as he held on to Indi's arm.

"No, I'm gonna do it. Look this is about dad, and I think we deserve to know what happened to him." She said.

"Alright, but if anything is wrong you come right back out." John B said to her.

"Now can anybody help me with that." She pointed at the vines that covered the hole.

"Give her a boost." John B told JJ as him and Pope held away the vines.

"I'm gonna boost you alright? I've seen it in movies several times. Ready?" He said as he sat down leaning at the wall and locked his hands together. 

"Remind me what we're looking for?" Indi asked her brother.

"You'll know it when you see it." 

She handed her flashlight for Kie to hold as she went over to JJ.

"Put your hands on my shoulders." He said, "And then your foot on my hand. Alright? On three." 

Indi put her foot on his hands and pushed herself up to the wall without waiting for JJ's countdown.

"Okay never mind, just forget about three." She could hear him mumble.

She climbed through the hole and jumped into the dark tomb.

"Can I have some light please?" She asked and Kie handed her back her flashlight.

"You alive? You got, like a heartbeat and everything?" John B anxiously asked through the hole.

"So far so good." She replied.

"Can I please have some more light?" She asked her friends because the flashlight barely helped against the darkness.

"Yeah yeah, I got you." Her brother said as he placed another light into the crack so she could see more.

She looked around in all the corners of the tomb. She started looking at the floor and when she couldn't find anything there, she looked up where she found another crack in the wall. She flashed her light inside it and found an envelope. 

"How are you?" She heard JJ anxiously ask through the hole as she took the envelope out.

"Oh my god." She said as she looked at it.
