Daniel St. Clair's POV
"Oh?" I said over the phone preventing myself from laughing out loud as I continued to listen to the person on the other line. I even ignore the disapproving look of the man sitting in front of me. "That's good to hear, baby boy. Call Granddad again when you have free time, okay?"
When I finally disconnected the phone conversation. I carefully placed back the receiver on the telephone on my desk and met the accusing eyes of my grandson-in-law.
"You are a cunning man." Roman Vasquez said in disgust while looking at me straight in the eye. This boy has the nerve to look at me insolently now, has he? What an ungrateful child. "Ruthlessly using your innocent great-grandchild as a spy for his parents. The devil will be ashamed upon meeting you."
"That's some harsh observation, lad," I commented sipping my brandy as I sat back on my chair in the library of my home giving him a knowing look.
He shook his head in disbelief. "What do you call it when little Max is reporting everything that is happening in Italy without him realizing it."
"It's called conversation, boy," I answered suavely, permitting myself to smile slightly. There was no way I would let him know how happy I was with the development that was happening in Italy. "His dear old granddad is only merely inquiring about their new life in Italy."
The lad in front of me narrowed his eyes in my direction but my expression remained blank. "Oh, right. That's why you know that his parents are often spending their afternoon in his father's bed. Talking. Just like Max innocently assumes."
I nearly choked my brandy when my grandson-in-law reminded me of that. "Well, it's not my problem anymore when Max informed me that so casually the other day. It is not my fault, right?"
"You must be very proud of yourself because your plan run so smoothly that it's only been two and half weeks and yet another wedding is on the way."
I cocked my eyebrow in his direction as the smile keep on slipping on my face. Damn it. "Ungrateful child. Remind me again to whom did you pledge your loyalty, lad?"
He eyed me dryly as if he would rather forget about it. "To you, of course. You are aware that from the start I am always loyal to you with all of your shenanigans."
I raised my glass in his direction for a silent toast. "That's good to hear, my boy."
Roman shook his head again but this time there was a grin on his face. "Your matchmaking skill is out of this world, Granddad. Tell me how did you do it?"
"Determination and a slight manipulation on the side, lad," I said mysteriously. A good businessman never shares his secret with anybody, I thought with satisfaction. Not even to this boy who was secretly working for me.
"What about Emerald?" I heard Ruby's husband ask, forcing me to think about my last lassie who is left unmarried. "I'm sure she will be the one who will thwart all your carefully laid plans. She saw firsthand what did you to her sisters."
"You make it sound as if I plan their demise." I permitted myself to laugh at that. This boy doesn't believe my skills after two—soon to be three successful pairings that I have arranged. "Don't you have faith in me, boy?"
He smiled reluctantly, sipping the brandy in his hand. "It's not that as if I don't trust your skills, Granddad. But I just think Emerald would be the one to break your winning streak."
I smirked in his direction. I have succeeded with the three of her sisters there's no way I would fail on the last one. "If she thinks that she can stop whatever plan I have for her let her think that way for now. But mark my words, lad. Before this year ends Emerald will walk down the aisle too."
