Imagine trying to buy two cups of coffee in one day😔

It was a peaceful afternoon.

You were sitting in the Roost alone with the bartender Brewster, who was busy polishing the same glass over and over and over again.

His quiet nature made it difficult for you to get to know him when you first came in, but after a few coffee purchases and several bad jokes, you had eventually succeeded in befriending him.

What can I say? You're just incredible like that :)

You finish off your cup of coffee and slam it against the counter.

This singular cup of coffee was not enough to quench your thirst. Your mouth felt like it had been filled with sand, so it's no surprise that you're about to ask Brewster the unthinkable.

"Hey," You say, and he looks up from his glass to stare into your soul. You begin to feel nervous. "Can I have another cup?"

The answer is instantaneous.

"No."  And he returns to his glass. He polishes it...again and again and again.

You become angry. Your thirst is suffocating, and your wallet is full of bells. Why couldn't you have another cup?? Who was he to deny you a second drink?!

No one, that's who.

You slam your cup against the counter again. It makes a boink sound.

"Why not?" You demand. When Brewster continues to ignore you for his glass, your anger heightens. "I'll pay you! Just get me another damn cup."

Still, Brewster ignores you. Just as you begin to contemplate leaving a bad Yelp review, he answers quietly, eyes still glued to the gleaming glass.

"You know the rules, and so do I," He says and now it's stuck in your head. "You cannot have more than one cup in a day."

You knew that, of course, but you didn't understand it.

Still furious, you huff. "Well, why not? The rules can always be changed."

He looks up then. A chill runs down your spine.

The bar is eerily silent, but no one notices.

He watches you for centuries, and you squirm underneath the intensity of his stare.

Finally, Brewster leans in.

"Do you want to know what happened to the last person that asked me for a second cup of coffee?" He questions quietly, so quietly you can hardly hear him over the pounding of your heart.

Beginning fo feel lightheaded, you shake your head slowly.

He nods and points at a back door you had never noticed before. You spot several suspicious stains splattered across its surface.

"They never drank again." He whispers, and you freeze. Had he...?

No.

He wouldnt be capable of...

But as Brewster turns to give you a chilling smile, you aren't so sure anymore.

You avert your gaze, causing him to chuckle. It isn't as friendly as it normally is....

Something has changed.

"Now that we've cleared that up," he begins, and you look up as he holds a dirty rag out to you. How unsanitary. This was a C-rated establishment for sure. "why don't you help me clean your glass?"

You take the rag from him and begin to polish your own glass. Your shaky hands make it almost impossible to hold onto it, but you do the best you can.

You feel Brewster watching you closely.

You become very aware of the scratching sounds coming from the back door.

As the scratching intensifies, you catch your own terrified reflection staring up at you from the surface of your cup.

You would never be thirsty again.
