Imagine being literate🌝
As you read through the 100th rant about the lack of greenery in town, you begin to regret existing.
Maybe getting caught for arson again wasn't your brightest idea....
You had been certain you'd be able to outrun the cops!! How were you supposed to know they had cars now??
Now bitter, you begin to contemplate your life.
It all started when you were born. The year was--
"Come on, Y/N." Pelly says cheerfully as she stamps an envelope, successfully breaking you out of your tragic backstory. You hate her. "Those community comments aren't going to read themselves!"
You attempt to stare her down, but when she continues to stamp envelopes happily, you give up.
You couldn't intimidate the brainless, after all.
You look up at the clock hung above her head (you had been here for 7 hours!) and ask,"When can I leave?"
"Well, the town agreed that you should read through the whole bunch first." Pelly answers, still annoyingly bubbly. "They say it'll help you understand the villagers better...help you be more empathetic! Maybe that'll deter you from future acts of domestic terrorism."
The whole bunch???
You look at the towers of paper surrounding you and feel like screaming. You'd be stuck here for ages!! You would grow old and die here! This was ridiculous punishment, even if you had set someone's house on fire.
"There's twenty stacks here!!" You complain, gesturing wildly at the towers around you. You accidnetally elbow one. It topples over. "I'm not even done with the first!!"
Pelly laughs softly, and you want to fight her.
"Better get to reading then, right?"She says, and before you can act on your violent urge, she points at the papers now scattered on the floor. "What do they say?"
You shrug. It had all blurred together after the fifth letter.
"Mostly about how there's not enough trees." You answer as you snatch up another paper to read through. "Someone's writing about her cheating ex hus- oh." You put the note down hastily, your face burning from shame. You were very familiar with this particular situation...
Pelly eyes you curiosuly, but she lets the subject drop.
You discreetly tear the paper apart before moving on to the next one, and then to the one after that. Not enough trees. Too many trees. They were never satisfied with the damn trees, were they???
You sigh, barely glancing at the next letter before setting it aside. However, a word catches your eye as you move to set it with the other tree complaints.
Confused, you glance at it again.
Was this a...threat??
Now curious, you read it fully.
I'm sick and tired of this town! I hate my job, I hate my neighbors, and I hate that ugly bitch Phyllis!!! But my hatred for these things is nothing compared to my hatred for that sad excuse of a mayor we have!! Yes, you heard me! This one's for Mayor Tortimer, you big fat green nasty smelling fat bitch I'm coming outside and I'm going to beat the fuck out of you bitch. No, you deserve worse! Mark my words, you will regret ever making me work overtime you dirty piece of
You stop reading the letter, for it becomes too vulgar for your mortal brain to comprehend.
As much as you detested Mayor Tortimer (you were sure you could do a better job as mayor), this was a little far.
You couldn't tell if the threat was serious. Maybe it was just a rant that went too far?
...You have a gut feeling that this is not the case.
Noticing your expression, Pelly asks, "Y/N? Are you okay?"
You jump at her voice before nodding quickly.
"Y-Yeah. Um, by any chance, do you know who....wrote this?"
Pelly watches you blankly as you hold the letter out to her, and you watch as she skims through it. Once done, she nods eagerly.
"Oh! Why, yes I do!" She smiles, and a chill runs down your spine. "It was me."
Before you can react, the door to the town hall swings open, revealing the mayor himself.
As his eyes land on you, he grins widely.
"Oh! If it isn't my favorite criminal." He says cheerfully, nodding towards the papers around you. "How are those community comments coming along? Anything interesting?"
You feel Pelly's eyes burning through your skin. You smile nervously, crumpling her threat in your hands.
"Not really." You lie, and Pelly returns to her usual self. "Just...Just a lot of tree messages."
The mayor nods understandingly.
"Same as every year, eh? Look at this present someone left me today!" He exclaims suddenly, and you finally notice the box he carries. You spot a few wires sticking out of it, and your stomach sinks. You will regret ever making me work overtime. "Isn't the wrapping cute?"
You eye the sparkly wrapping paper cautiously. You did not trust it.
Pelly gasps obnoxiously before clapping her wings together.
"Oh, it's lovely!" She gushes, and her act is so convincing, it makes you sick. Her next words shoot raw fear through your veins. "You should open it, Mayor."
When you meet her eyes, they're glimmering with malice.
The mayor remains oblivious as he nods excitedly.
"I should!" He exclaims, his hands reaching for the pretty bow set on top of the 'gift.'
You tense, but relax slightly as he struggles to undo it. While he fiddles with it, Pelly rises from behind her desk and beckons you towards her.
"Y/N, can you come with me outside?" She asks innocently, and if you didn't know any better, you wouldn't have realized that something horrific was about to occur. "There's some more letters out in the dropbox."
But alas, you were but a mere pawn in her game.
You were powerless here, and you knew it.
Defeated, you rise to your feet and wordlessly follow after her. You can't bring yourself to look at Mayor Tortimer as you trudge past.
Pelly holds the door open for you, and you hasten your pace. It couldn't be long until that bow came undone...
The two of you barely make it outside before it happens.
The town hall explodes.
The heat of the explosion scorches your hair, and you hear yourself scream from miles away...
You stare at the burning building in shock, your mind numb.
As the flames burn into your retinas, Pelly rests her wing heavily against your shoulder.
Warily, you look back to see her watching you intensely, a terrifying smile on her face.
"Our secret, right?"
You think about her threat, the only evidence you had against her, now burnt to ashes.
You think about the stacks upon stacks of community comments, facing the same fate, reduced to the same ashes.
Now unreadable.
You return her smile easily.
"Right."
The hall burns for hours.
