Imagine scamming the working class

It is a beautiful Sunday morning, and you are currently hiding behind a bush.

The plaza before you was relatively empty, with the only two people around busy engaging in a completely legal business exchange. You watch as Apollo finishes up his purchase before he begins to leave the area, a small baggie gripped tightly in his wings. He inspects the area cautiously before slipping the bag into his pocket.

He leaves immediately, and you smile to yourself. This was perfect! It meant there would be no one around to witness what you were about to do.

You watch as your target counts out the bells Apollo paid her with cheerfully, the turnips on her head tumbling onto the floor as she tilts her head to examine the currency closely. She does not notice them as they plop onto the dirty floor. How unsanitary.

You watch as her expression falls slightly. Apollo must have ripped her off is your assumption, for she quickly turns to chase after him, her voice loud enough to reach you even from where you hide.

Within seconds, she is gone.

You glance towards the spot she had previously stood at, and your eyes land on her abandoned turnips immediately.

You had been planning this for weeks, and you had been watching her for hours just waiting for this moment...

The moment you would finally be able to commit a clean robbery. But something does not feel right.

This was suspiciously perfect....

Whatever. There was no time to waste! Apollo couldnt have gone far, unless he had done this intentionally. If this was the case, he could be miles away by now, giving you enough time to be careful with your attack.

But this was a risk you were not willing to take, so you know you must act quickly.

You jump out of your bush and run towards the lonely turnips. The instant your hand grabs onto their basket, you turn and race back towards your hiding spot just as you hear Daisy Mae cursing underneath her breath.

Had she seen you?? You hoped not because you were very unlikely to explain yourself out of this one.

"That stupid bird," you hear her say, and you hold your breath as she enters your vision. It doesnt seem like she spotted you..."He knows I need that money! I cant believe he--"

You shut your eyes as she falls silent, bracing yourself for her realization to hit.

Surely she would rip the place apart to search for them. Surely she would find you. I mean, a bush?? How more obvious could you get??

Sloppy, Y/N. You were getting sloppy! Maybe you didn't have it in you to be a criminal anymore...

"My turnips!!" Daisy Mae squeaks, and to your horror, she bursts into tears. This...was not what you were expecting at all. You peek through the leaves and spot her crumpled against the ground, her pain palpable as she trembles.

...Why did you feel like a monster?

The turnip basket eyes you, judging you silently. You didnt understand why she was so affected by this small crime. Didnt she have a whole farm of these?

It was selfish of her to want her turnips back when she had an abundance of them, right? You needed them more. There were at least twenty in here! That would pay off your debt for good...

Daisy Mae cries harder, and you sigh. You were unable to convince yourself, and the guilt will grow to be too much by tonight.

Annoyed with your sudden change of heart, you gather the turnips and shield them from view by holding them behind you.

You slip out of your bush for the second time that morning and begrudgingly walk over to where Daisy Mae lies, the trail of snot on her face even longer than usual. Seriously, how unsanitary.

You hover next to her awkwardly, her face now buried in her hands. You clear your throat, but she does not look up.

"Hey,"you finally say, and you cringe at how your voice sounds. "what's wrong?"

Daisy Mae jumps in surpise before looking up, her face wet with tears and snot. You smile to shield your repulsion.

"Oh, Y/N!" She cries, and maybe you should've just gone home. It was too late to be a good person after all; what is this, the 59th chapter? "My turnips went missing, and I needed that money to pay off my grandmother's hospital bills. I'm afraid...I'm afraid of what Tom Nook will do to her if I fail to pay it all off by this week."

No wonder she was a mess, then. Tom Nook was ruthless, you would know. He was the reason you had decided to steal from her today in the first place.

Suddenly,  you feel very proud of yourself for being a Good Person. Surely the universe would reward you somehow now.

"Dang that's tough." You say, and it's true. Before Daisy Mae can glare at you for your insensitive reply, you point at something behind her. "Hey, isn't that Apollo?"

"That burnt turkey! I'm going to kick his ass, can you believe he sold me short??" Daisy Mae fumes, whipping her head in the direction you indicated. In truth, Apollo was nowhere to be seen; you admire his quick getaway.

As she's distracted, you set the turnips by your feet and prepare yourself for the riskiest performance of your life.

"Oh!" You exclaim, and you really hope she doesn't catch on to your suspicious tone. "aren't these your turnips, Daisy Mae?"

At your words, she turns and gasps as soon as she spots her basket.

"T-They are!!" She cries, and your heart begins to pound harder as she eyes you in confusion. "But...But I don't understand. I checked for them everywhere...how are they...?"

You shrug. She was seeing right through your act...

"I found them while you were looking away." You explain, and Daisy Mae continues to eye you suspiciously. Just when you begin to fear you've been caught, however, she smiles brightly.

"That makes sense," she says cheerfully, picking up her basket and holding it to her chest tightly. "You dont know how much you've helped me, Y/N! I-I'm so relieved... I think I'm going to cry."

Oh no. Not again...

She does not cry. Instead, she digs into her basket and holds out several large turnips to you.

"Here." She places the bulky turnips in your hands. "You can take these for free."

What,!,! You had just mugged her, and now she was rewarding you for it??

You are flabbergasted.

"But what about your grandmother?" You cry, but you pocket the turnips anyway.

"Don't worry about that, Y/N. This is the least I can do to pay you back for saving my life!" Daisy Mae tells you, oblivious to your criminal activites."I'll just sell the rest to the jocks for three times the price. They'll believe me if I say they'll help them get ripped."

You simply nod as she adjusts her basket in her hands and begins to leave.

Over her shoulder, she calls happily, "Good bye, Y/N! You're the best."

The turnips she gave you feel gteat in your pockets, and you watch her leave smugly.

Yes.

You really were.
