Yooncheol Nam was born on the 14th of November, 1979. He was 34 when he died.
Yooncheol graduated from Kookmin university in the department of English literature. He treated his students like they were his friends, and he was chill teacher. He counselled them if his students were going trough difficult times and he was a very loved teacher by the entirety of Danwon.
During the sinking, Yooncheol had helped Deokha Choi with contacting the authorities. After that, he began to lead his students to the deck in small groups. When the ferry had tilted badly, he lifted them to the deck instead. He was last seen going back to the students' cabins when the water was reaching his chest. Thanks to his efforts, 13-16 lives were saved.
Digital Seoul Culture and Arts University selects annually a Nam Yooncheol scholarship to honor his sacrifice. The lecture hall of the North Korean House #708 also named one of their lecture halls the 'Nam Yooncheol lecture hall'. The university where he graduated from, Kookmin university, also honors his sacrifice.
His body was recovered from the 17th cabin. He looked like he was holding someone, but lost a grip of them after dying. He now rests at Sangdang-gu Catholic Cemetery.
