Corinth Pov
"Is this enough?" Jess asked while trying to average just enough food to place on my plate. The smell of onions knocked me over like a wave trampling a baby. I loved onions.
" Yeah that's fine, I don't really have an appetite," I said as I accepted the plate and took a seat around the dining table. Caleb didn't acknowledge me when I first entered the room so I tried to keep out of his way.
" Oh I see, but my cooking is quite good if I do say so myself," Jess said in a joking manner. She was quite nice considering she barely knew me.
" It's ok, I think this will be fine," I answered and threw her a grateful smile. Caleb looks up at me but immediately looks away when his eyes made four with mine.
" Caleb bug, are you ok why is your face so red?" Jess asked. A blank look flashed across Caleb's face. He gets up and dashes the silverware into the sink and abandoned the room.
" What's his problem?" Shenelle asked annoyance apparent in her voice as she entered the room; sending daggers in my direction. Causing me to swallow the lump in my throat.
" Why is she here?" Shenelle asked in disgust. She then takes a seat adjacent to me but keeps her eyes on Jess as she awaited a response.
" Her mom has a trip and she has been really kind to us since we moved here last year, it's just three days," Jess explained. The awkwardness in the room caused me to squirm in my seat. Shenelle wore a blank expression.
" Hmm ok." she shrugged.
"Can I ask you something?" I asked as I slid a spoonful of food into my mouth. Shenelle turns to me and lets out an audible sigh.
" Shoot," she answered. Signaling that I continue.
"Why'd you do that?" The question doesn't seem to register, she starts laughing but stops abruptly. She leans in close and smiles.
" I do what I want when I want, get used to it," she replied in an acidic tone.
" Get this into your head, as timid and shy as I look, I've had more than enough trauma to deal with you and your shit." I whispered back before I left the table
" Are you done already?" I heard Jess ask as she entered the room.
"Not hungry." I kept walking as I ran up the staircase. It was evident that Shenelle was staring at me when I felt like someone was drilling a hole into my back.
I walked through the corridor fiddling with my thumb as I looked down at my stomach that was rumbling.
I decided to ignore it, I pushed my door open and came into contact with a pair of eyes that stood out in the darkness. I slowly motioned toward him. Afraid of the possibilities but curious enough to find out.
" I hate how weak I become around you," Caleb said as he turned to face the windows that allowed in the cold fresh air. I didn't respond. I left room for him to speak on.
" I hate that despite trying to keep you further. . . "He paused. Afraid that If he continued that he wouldn't be able to come back. I couldn't blame him.
" I can't," I said wearily.
He then walked towards me taking long strides and plants himself in front of me. His breath heavy, the depth in his eyes growing wilder. He just looked at me. In a way no one else has. Like I was the answer to all the questions he ever wanted to be answered. And he just left and left me standing there.
I leaned against the door, propping against the only thing stable to help me from collapsing. After collecting myself I walked toward the window sill and climbed over to face the stars. Relishing in the darkness that took over when the sun left. The perfect unspoken dialect that kept the two from ever having to face one another.
