Corinth Pov
"Do you swim?" Caleb asked. He had taken me out for a walk around the lake that sat in front of the cabin after the night had arrived. The scenery was resplendent. From the crystalline appearance to the seaweed that accentuated the lake's floor.
"I used to like swimming before but I don't anymore," I said in a low tone. As we swung our feet over the lake below while sitting on a tiny projection of a patio.
"So that's a no?" He asked sarcastically. While he knitted his eyebrows and squinted his eyes. He got up and reached his hands to take mines to which I accepted and we were both now standing face to face.
"I guess you can say so," I looked up at him " do you?"
" Yeah I do, I wanted to show you something, so we can talk about that another time." He said as he took off into a den of tall trees that looked like dark shadows piled together. Dancing in the wind of night.
I followed him and it remained quiet. After walking for roughly 15 minutes, it felt as though the darkness of night was growing deeper with every step closer. I noticed a light sparkling in the distance glittering as the wind spoke to it. As I got closer I noticed there was a blanket laid neatly, with a basket of food on it. Candles stood up and were lit at each corner of the blanket.
"Is this for me?" I questioned. As I pointed toward the basket of food.
"Isn't that a bit selfish Polaris?" He smirked. He then walked toward the blanket and pats the seat nearest to him.
"I won't bite Polaris," Caleb laughed while taking a bite of a pocodotted strawberry
"I figured as much." I chuckled. As I took a seat and placed my hands on top of my folded legs.
"So, when did you get to do all this?" I questioned while looking around; admiring the flame that the firewood produced. The atmosphere was clean and serene. Peaceful
"Can I ask you something?" He asked with furrowing eyebrows.
"Depends on what you're going to ask," I whispered while fiddling with the hem of my dress and reaching for a strawberry.
"I didn't want to bring this up but last night when Luke. . ." He doesn't get to ask when I cut him off. I felt a sharp pain journey through the veins in my head.
"Could we not," I said while knitting my fingers together.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable." He quickly apologized.
" I wanted to make sure that you knew that you were safe with me." He goes on to explain.
"I know you wouldn't do that, you are nothing like him." I blinked away the tears that were ready to take me.
"I want to get to know you, you are the only person that I've been able to let in." He said while swallowing audibly.
"There is a lot to know about me and burdening other people with the scars that call themselves my thoughts are the worst gift I could give to anyone," I said in a regretful tone. While avoiding his eyes.
" What about others that want to share that pain with you?" Caleb asked turning me to look at him.
"I care. . . I just don't know how to show it." I said as I looked away.
"Remember when you would flinch when I did this." He said as he grabbed my hands and placed it in his as he smiled warmly. I then tugged for him to let go playfully. I didn't feel dirty, the way my skin crawled when I remembered Luke, but with Caleb, I was okay despite the demons.
