We had been home for an hour or so no sight of dad, I was starting to return to my normal self and Steve was noticing it too. "You're getting back to normal again." He said sitting down with a slice of chocolate cake. I smiled reaching up and taking a little icing with my finger. Steve rolled his eyes and pulled the plate away. "Sorry, I won't touch your cake." I got up and walked down to my bedroom, I dropped down on my bed staring at the ceiling trying to figure out why I had felt thati way earlier today. It had been a while when I heard the front door open, I rolled off my bed and peeked around the doorframe it was my father. He was stumbling in drunk as usual, I kept watching Steve hopped off the couch to leave I couldn't hear much of what went down but it was getting heated. I snuck further out to see if I could catch a glimpse. I saw my father's eyes flash over to me. He was really angry. I tried to hide behind the pillar still watching, "Get over here!" He yelled out looking at me and slurring his words. Steve put his arms up blocking my father from me. "She's not part of this leave her out of it." He was up against him trying to push him back. "Get out from behind that thing!" He yelled shoving Steve. "Cat go in your room and lock your door." Steve said in a stern voice I complied and rushed to my room. I locked the door as their voices got louder. I hated fighting and I covered my ears and slid down the door, something smashed followed by the front door slamming and it grew quiet. There was a light knock on the door and I slowly unlocked it and opened it, Steve was leaning against the door frame. He had a bruise growing on his cheek. "Oh my god!" I reached my hand up to rub his cheek, "it's nothing C'mon let's head out, I don't want to be here when he gets back." I nodded and tied my hair up as we walked out the front door. "You up for the Curtis house." He said looking over at me. "Sure." I replied looking back at his bruise. I felt awful for leaving him to fight my battles. "Hey it's nothing." He said covering his cheek with his hand. I shyly smiled and looked down, putting my hands in my pockets. He wrapped his arm around my shoulder as we walked down the hill as I laid my head on his shoulder.
