You watched, lips pursed as Kakashi threw back yet another shot of sake, his frown deepening.

His eyes were glossy, but you knew he wasn't drunk, (his tolerance was too high to succumb to his drink yet) just lost in memories of the past that had always consumed him.

As much as you wanted to approach him and tell him that it was wrong to drink away all his problems, you knew it would just create more problems.

You and Kakashi had a complex past with each other, you were first friends which eventually developed into first loves.

But then, his father died, followed by Rin, Obito, Minato, and Kushina. After that he just... drifted away from you, and then all together disappeared.

Sighing, you lifted your own cup to your lips. As you lightly winced at the familiar burn, you averted your eyes as he stood up.

You mentally cursed yourself for not hiding better. All he had to do was look in your general direction, and your (h/c) would jump out to him. You ducked your head as you heard footsteps approaching.

"...(Y/N)?" You swore under your breath before lifting your gaze up to meet his. His lips parted a bit in surprise. "Hey, Kakashi..." He frowned a little. "I haven't seen you in... awhile."

It was true, you had taken to avoiding him once he got his genin team. You'd figured he had moved on, leaving you in his past.

"I've been busy, um... how are you?" The silverette shook his head. "Remember when we promised that we'd never be like awkward adults and have small talk?"

You could've sworn his voice cracked a little as he brought up the memory, but you chalked it up to the sake he had been chugging all night.

You and Kakashi giggled as you watched two strangers stutter and stammer like they were just learning to speak. The funniest part was that they weren't even talking about anything important!

"I-Isn't the, um, w-weather nice?" The man asked nervously. "Kind of... I m-mean it looks like it's g-going to r-rain..."

The two of your shared a disturbed look. "If we ever get like that, someone should just shove us off a bridge!" You laughed, stifling the sound with your hand.

"Pfft, that won't happen! We're best friends, nothing can come in between us!" Oh, how times change...

"Yeah... we were so naive then," You breathed out a bitter laugh at how oblivious the two of you were. "What happened to us?" Kakashi asked brokenly.

You scowled, almost offended at the question. "You're asking what happened? You happened Kakashi. You pushed me away, you avoided me."

His eyes widened a margin in surprise, but the sorrow on his face showed that he knew you were right. "Just tell me why at least," You muttered. His gaze landed on the seat beside you and you wordlessly gestured for him to sit down.

"I lost almost everyone... well, everyone, I guess, after I pushed you away... but you were still positive, you still had everything I didn't... and I couldn't handle it." You resisted the urge to look away from his intense gaze.

"I didn't realize until you weren't there to laugh or make me smile, that I did need you... but it was too late. You had already moved on." Your frown deepened. He thought you had moved on? In all honesty, you were still moving on.

"Just for tonight, we can forget all that. Just remember the good things," You whispered into your pretty much full cup.

His cup softly clinked against yours. "I'd like that. Sake and good times." You smiled at the notion, the tension broken.
