Lights Out- Shikamaru X Reader

Prompt: Ways to say I love you without saying it (Leaving the light on because your partner has terrible sleeping habits but is scared of the dark)

   

    You blinked harshly, trying to soothe the burning ache behind your eyes as you focused on the blurry words of your book. You had started the long mystery the day before, and your curiosity, as well as your screwed sleeping habits, wouldn't let you put it down.

    You also knew that Shikamaru had already gone to bed, meaning all the lights were out. It wasn't that you were scared of the dark, it was more what the dark could be hiding. At least, that's what you told Shikamaru when he teased you.

    When blinking incessantly ceased to do anything for the throbbing, you closed your book, disappointed that you hadn't yet solved the mystery. You yawned as your gaze landed on the clock. It read a little past one in the morning, much to your chagrin. You knew you were going to regret it.

    You tiptoed out of the living room, not quite sure what you were sneaking past, but still feeling the urge. As much as you wanted to flip the lights on, you knew it'd wake your lover up and you wanted to avoid that.

    You swiftly hit the switch to the living room, flinching as darkness set in. Except it... didn't? You walked down the hall, surprised to see the bathroom light on.

Shikamaru never left lights on, in fact, he managed to lecture you every time you did. (A/N: That's actually me lmao) Just before you could bring yourself to turn the light off, you noticed a note on the door.

   'I know you don't like the dark, (Y/N), so even though it was a pain, I left the light on so you could see when you (finally) came to bed.'

    A grin spread across your face, even as you flipped the light switch. You stepped into your shared bedroom, unsurprised to see the Nara already fast asleep. You quickly and silently changed your clothes before climbing into your side of the bed.

    You turned over to face him and pressed a soft kiss to his nose. "Thanks, Shika, you're the best." You let loose a small laugh as a soft smile spread across his face. Kami, how you loved this boy.
