Chapter Eighteen: The Attack

POV: Third Person

As dawn came, both sleepy mobians were up and ready for the day ahead.

The day they would put their plan into action.

Zero was up first and got breakfast before Gadget woke up. They both fed on the sweet berries Zero had shown Gadget a few days back and soon they prepared for the day.

Both of them washed and wore their gear; Gadget wore his glasses, belt piece and shoes while Zero wore his mask, gloves, shoes and a small white scarf that covered his neck. Zero had also crafted Gadget a small red blade from the ruby.

"We should go now while it's still early" Zero commented while stretching.

Gadget looked to the sky, the sun was just barely up yet, "Alright, they may be still sleeping so that's good" he replied.

Zero nodded, "Then let's go" he used his ruby to pick up the location of the base Gadget got kidnapped into and set out for it with Gadget following beside him.

The journey wasn't that far, which surprised both of them as the base was only a mile away from the invisible barrier Zero had created to keep people away - which was obviously foiled by a two tailed fox, much to Zero's disgust.

As they approached the base, which only looked like an abandoned bunker, they set out their plan of action. Zero was to place illusions on the sleeping mobians inside to keep them in a deep slumber while Gadget searched for Sonic because there's a very high chance he could already be awake knowing him.

Zero easily broke inside the base without causing too much noise, Gadget immediately searched around silently, taking the time to also search through any plans they had to get rid of Eggman as it could give the pair ideas to get rid of the doctor themselves.

Though searching, Gadget found a plan on a tablet describing a place called, "Null Space". He raised a brow at this but decided to read through it to see what it was about.

A section said:

Null space is an infinite abyss of nothing but dark matter and space, to get to there one must have the power of a Phantom Ruby - originally created by Doctor Eggman - and enough physical and mental strength to open a portal to the dimension. What happens inside the portal to a physical body is unknown but once the portal closes there is no escaping Null Space unless the soul is very determined and has hope as documented when Sonic returned from the endless abyss during the war.

There is much we still don't know about Null Space, but it cannot be opened again due to the Phantom Ruby prototypes being destroyed and our last prototype being melted by the artificial sun.

The only ruby left is in Infinite's chest.

"Zero...he can open the portal" Gadget mumbled and decided to take the small tablet to show the jackal his findings once Zero was done with putting everyone into a deep sleep.

"Look what we have here. The traitor has returned, and is stealing a tablet filled with information we need" A deep voice chuckled and came out from the shadows.

Gadget spun around and growled at the mobian, he then gasped and fear shot through his amber eyes as he recognised the being with crimson striped quills.

"Shadow..." Gadget whispered and backed away slowly, he gripped his dagger in one hand while holding the tablet in the other.

"You're not just a traitor, you're a down right criminal" Shadow growled and walked up to the terrified wolf.

"Like I said before, I don't choose sides" Gadget retorted, trying to push back his fear of the dark hedgehog. "I know you and Infinite have had conflict in the past and-"

"I want to finish it." Infinite walked into the room and growled, clenching his fists.

Gadget breathed in relief in his head but watched the two rivals approach eachother with fear building up inside him, he wasn't sure what the outcome was going to be - if one of them escaped this alive, or none of them escaped alive. Either way, he knew Shadow had some unfinished business with the jackal and intended to finish it today.

No matter the cost.

Shadow was the first to deal a blow, using his teleportation he swiftly punched Infinite in his side, making Infinite fall to the side but quickly get up again and charge at Shadow, the two of them locked in an endless battle of strength and speed.

Gadget was starting to have none of it, he can't watch these two fight anymore and decided to intervene.

"ENOUGH!" Gadget yelled and stood in between the two mobians. "Agk!" he was stuck in the stomach by Shadow.

"Don't interfere with my business agai-!" Shadow was interrupted by a swift kick to his own stomach by a pissed off jackal.

"Don't touch my wolf." Infinite snarled behind the mask he wore and stood in front of the injured wolf.

Shadow smirked and teleported behind both of them, he grabbed the scarlet wolf by his neck and ripped out the blade the wolf had, resting the sharp blade on the wolf's neck.

Infinite spun around and narrowed his eyes, deep inside he feared for Gadget's life, but he had to keep fighting if he is to end this.

"Let him go. He is not part of our fight" Infinite spoke sharply.

"Oh he is, but don't think I didn't spot his claim mark either you dirty jackal" Shadow retorted and scoffed. "He is as much part of this as we are"

Infinite spawned in a flurry of cubes and modified them so they shaped into spears, he fired them at Shadow, making sure none hit his wolf. Shadow yelled and dropped the blade and Gadget as he was attacked with the crimson spears.

Shadow was down temporarily as he bled from all over his body, his blood dripped onto the floor below him as the spears soon disintegrated, leaving small holes around the hedgehogs body.

Gadget crawled over to Infinite and stood up, he held the tablet in his hand still as he needed to make sure to keep that information for him.

Infinite watched Shadow wearily, he was still on high alert and his ruby was glowing very brightly - showing that within a second he could spawn those spears again and hopefully impale the dark being this time around.

"Go, Gadget." Infinite spoke and rushed him to the door.

"No! I'm not leaving you." Gadget protested.

"Now!" Infinite shouted before the sound of a gunshot was heard and the ringing of his large ears. Infinite heard a body collapse to the floor and seen his scarlet wolf bleeding from his chest where his heart was.

"GADGET!!" Infinite yelled and crouched beside the injured being, he cupped the wolf's cold cheek.

"Z...zero..." Gadget whimpered.

"No, please! Stay with me!" Infinite begged and held the dying wolf in his arms, he took off his mask and threw it aside.

Shadow stood up weakly and lowered his gun, he smirked and watched the scene - his plan was successful.

Gadget winced and weakly stroked the white furred cheek of his jackal.

"I...l-love you.."

And as those words were spoken, the dying wolf gave out his last breath.

Gadget was dead.
