I decided last night that I wasn't going to go to school.
After Ryan and Luke left and I went inside, all I did was set down Ryan's gift and walk back out to the porch. I was planning on opening it but I guess after I met the weird man it slipped my mind.
I went back in and fell asleep. I don't know how or why I instantly slept. I honestly thought I would be up for hours, after...
...after they took uncle.
I got a call from my mom before I fell asleep. She said they had made it to the hospital and he was on life support. Which she then said, "He's not dead honey."
Yet.
Is what I wish I had said. But I never would. I knew Mom was holding onto whatever hope she could find. The polar opposite of me.
I told her I was staying home, and she understood. She would text me with updates during the night. She told me to lock everything up and stay inside.
Mom wasn't coming home tonight.
"Ugh." I leaned over in my bed and stared at the buzzing phone on my desk. Light was pouring into the room, so it took a few moments for my eyes to adjust and read the name on my phone. It said mom on it. My hands instantly reached for the phone and pressed the green button. I put it on speaker phone and sat up. "Hey Mom." I answered with a yawn. She was quiet for a minute before responding quietly.
"Sorry to wake you up I know it's early." She whispered. My eyes flung open and I grabbed the phone in between both my hands. I could hear the tremble in her voice. It was husky and low. She added sniffles between her words and they practically punched me through the phone.
My heart sank.
"Mom?"
"Craig...Benny isn't coming home." She gulped back some tears at the end of her sentence. "They-they have to..." she hiccuped lightly, "pull the plug sweetie." My eyes fell to the ground as my hands released the phone. It landed on the ground with a loud thud. I heard my mother's muffled cries carry through the phone. "I'm sorry." My breathing sped up and I pressed my back into my bed frame. I curled my legs up to my face and clenched my muscles. I wanted to cry, but I just couldn't. Several nerves in my body would tense and release with my short, rapid breaths.
I felt my heart speed up and slow when I had to take a large gulp of air to compensate for the small ones I was pulling in.
"No." I said quietly to myself. Quiet enough I know mom didn't hear it. "Please...please no." The tears I had been searching for hit me like a wave. They soaked down my cheeks and onto my shirt and knees. "Not him." I whispered lightly. "It's not him..."
"Craig? Are you still there?" My mom's voice came through the phone again. This time it was more controlled. "If you can still hear me, I think you should come to the hospital." She paused I took more deep breaths to calm myself. "You don't have to. I know you probably don't want to, but you should come say goodbye before he's really gone." She cleared her throat. "I'm going to wait at the entrance in case you come but it's your choice Craig." She sighed into the phone. "I'm hanging up now, okay? I love you a lot and I can't wait to be home and hug you so much." I waited a few moments before I heard the phone ding, signaling to me that our phone call was over.
My body shook but I still managed to pull myself up from the bed. I stared around my room and found the clothes that were closest to me. I grabbed them and threw it on. I lunged for my glasses and went straight out the door.
Leaving behind my phone and Ryan's present.
Right now nothing matters more.
Nothing.
