Luke ordered me into the kitchen to wait. After our previous conversation, I was still a little shocked. With my mind scrambled the only thing for me to do was distract myself. I figured I would turn on the sink and do some cleaning. That could help me get my mind off things. There's three unwashed dishes and the washer needed emptied. I didn't know exactly where everything went, but I knew I'd figure it out with time.
Luke was good about keeping his house clean, I wondered why he hadn't done them yet seeing as in my eyes he was a neat freak. There was never a speck of dust in his house and everything had it's place.
It was all too perfect.
There was a loud voice outside. Luke seemed to be angry at the person who approached the door. I couldn't hear what he was saying but could easily pick up on the tone of the conversation. Luke was adamant on me not seeing who was at the door. I respected his instruction, no matter how much I wanted to see who's outside. He was probably doing it for my own good.
Luke's voice died down as I assumed the other person was speaking to him.
I grabbed a nearby dirty plate and started to scrub it, rolling up my sleeves with a sigh. I heard another loud bang that startled me and the plate slipped from my hand, colliding with the ground. The plate shattered into thousands of tiny pieces. Amidst the noise, I heard several voices now, all were familiar, yet I couldn't place them. Luke was yelling now.
I mumbled to myself about how clumsy I was. More shouts arose outside. I lifted my head and tried my best to drown out the other noise. Luke didn't seem to be talking anymore. It was just a series of loud sounds. Whatever was going on out there was serious.
Should I help?
Luke told me to stay here...
I wonder if he is okay?
"He's fine Ryan." I jumped and let out a small yell that could barely be heard over the chaos outside. I threw my head around towards the voice, a man was stood at the entrance of the kitchen, a few feet away.
"W-who..." My body trembled, staring at him with confusion. The man was tall, maybe taller than Luke. His figure was slim but muscly. I'm confident in saying nobody, in their right mind, would willing fight him. His hair was dark, fluffier. In fact if you asked me...Luke seemed to be the spitting image of him.
He wore a dark colored suit, a deep red, with a white undershirt that was slightly undone. Very well dressed for someone who is breaking and entering.
"I'll keep this short and sweet. It's a pleasure to finally meet you!" He bowed in a professional manner and leaned back into the doorway. He pushed back some hair that fell into his face and placed a strict smile on his lips.
His smile wasn't as nice as Luke's.
That's for sure.
"You-you're his father." I stuttered, leaning my back on the sink. The memories of how Luke described moments ago him hit me like a wave. I tried my best to keep a distance.
"Indeed. Actually, I came to speak with you." He took a step forward. I moved away.
"Me?"
"Yes." He came closer faster than I expected and grabbed my hand. I flinched at the contact. He inspected my fingers; they were wrapped with some bandages Luke summoned. I pulled my hand away from him and held it by my shoulder. "You've been burned. I'm assuming my son did that." I kept quiet. "Ryan, I know my son better than anyone." He backed up and stepped on some of the plate shards with his shoes. "He's been different ever since he met you. He's been acting weird. Autumn, his mother, told me about it. We just don't think that..." He paused trying to find the right words. "Look kid. I just want my son back home." He lifted his eyes to stare at me. They were cold but shined with serious unhappiness deep inside. He was upset. Conflicted.
Did he sincerely miss his son? Is that why he is here?
There was a scream from outside. What is happening?
"I'm here to reason with him on coming back home, however..." He turned away and bent down gingerly picking up the pieces of the plate. "He won't come home without you." His tone seeped to frustration. Clearly he wasn't a fan of me.
"Isn't your home..." He cut me off.
"I'm assuming he told you. Actually, I'm sure of it." He placed the pieces on the counter, adjusting the collar of his shirt. "We don't live up here. And he doesn't belong up here either." I nodded my head.
We both turned towards a big crash that happened to the side of the house. I sucked in a quick breath and turned to his father.
"Is he okay?" I questioned quietly.
"Ah yes. He's an excellent fighter I made sure of that myself." He turned over his shoulder to stare at me, slightly flexing the muscles hidden beneath his suit. "Especially when he's fighting for something he loves." I tilted my head in confusion.
"He's fighting?"
"Listen Ryan. I don't have much time before he's done with those guys outside. I have a favor to ask of you." I lowered my hands and stared intensely at his eyes. "Luke has a future ahead of him. Something that will set him up for the rest of time until he passes it on to another." His father crossed his arms. "But he won't even give that future a try as long as you are around." The gears started turning in my mind. He wants me to...
Leave him?
"I c-can convince him." I answered shyly, now taking my eyes to the ground. I avoided the cruel gaze hitting me.
"No Ryan. If anyone can it's his family." He pushed. "Please Ryan. I know it feels wrong, but I need you to leave for a while. At least until Luke can get his head out of the clouds." I heard the front door click. Luke yelled my name. His father tensed and gave me a needy stare. He leaned forward into my ear and whispered quietly. "Consider it. If you make the right decision, I'll be here to take him home after you leave. I'll make sure you see each other again sometime in the future." He backed up and snapped his fingers. "Please Ryan. Let me have my son back." And with that he left, leaving nothing left of his presence. I stared at the place he was before when Luke ran into the room.
In my shocked state I didn't acknowledge him at all. After several attempts of trying to get my attention I heard his voice.
"Ryan are you okay?" I turned my head towards him.
His father said he was fighting...there wasn't a scratch on him. From the commotion alone anyone would think he would be injured. He only looked as if he went for a run.
"Luke?" I asked quietly. He moved towards me and pulled my body into a hug. I blinked and squeezed back absentmindedly.
"You seem shaken up. Did something happen?" He questioned. I paused, thoughts racing through my head.
His father just wants his son back.
I stole him away from something important....
His family. His real family.
What if the best thing to do is...
"Luke I-"
