Like Mother Like Son (36)

Luke and his mother were opposing forces that's for sure. Constantly butting heads like a pair of goats. Luke's mother would tell a story and Luke would claim parts of it weren't true. Then they would argue loudly before both turned to me and asked whose side I was on.

It was almost routine.

I constantly refused to take sides and they would just continue to the next story or the next quarrel. I envied them both for having such a close relationship. Luke's mother would openly insult him and Luke would shoot back like a bullet. I could tell he was adapted to her personality.

"You know Luke is afraid of heights, right?" His mother laughed. Luke huffed in an annoyed manor and crossed his arms.

"I'm not afraid of heights I'm afraid of falling mom." He retorted. Autumn shrugged and stuck her hands in her pockets.

"Either way he's a wimp." She shot that comment at me with a small wink. "Don't expect too much out of him."

"Okay!" Luke stood up quickly and shot a look at his mother. "We are done here, and I think we should have dinner!" He moved past the couch to the kitchen.

"It's a little early for dinner love." Autumn chuckled. "You're just embarrassed that your boyfriend likes me better than you." I heard Luke mumble something to himself in the kitchen. I turned to Autumn and she fake pouted pretending to act like Luke. I giggled.

"Ryan leave her in there and come help me." Luke told me. I stood up and so did Autumn.

"Relax Luke, I'm not going to steal him away. I've got to be heading back home anyways." She checked her watch. "Come see me out the door son." I heard Luke fumble around in the kitchen before coming out to the doorway and opening it for her. She leaned into my ear and whispered quietly. "I may have raised him stubborn but at least he's a gentleman. Trust him Ryan. He's a good one he is." Then she walked to Luke, kissed his forehead and grabbed a purse on the coat rack. She was about to walk out the door when she turned and hugged me. Her arms wrapped around me in a motherly warmth I had forgotten existed. She tucked some hair of mine away behind my ear and let go. "Can't forget to hug my future son in law." I froze. She patted Luke on the arm and exited.

"Thank god she's gone." He locked the door and turned to me. I blinked and gripped my elbow. "It is a little early for dinner, but if you feel like eating now, I wouldn't mind putting something together." He walked up behind me and placed his hand on my hip. I felt my cheeks flush while he brought my head to his torso. We stood there for a bit before Luke let me go with a pat to my head. I walked to a side table and grabbed my phone off the top of it. As soon as the screen lit up, I saw a message from Luke. It was short and sweet, just telling me he was on his way home. I smiled and opened my phone to notes and typed out a small message. I showed it to Luke.

I felt that now was a good time to talk to him. Everything needed explained and after his mother said something like that I felt my heart snap. I want to know it all. I want to understand what he's been hiding from me and why he wouldn't tell me.

I want to know why everyone tells me just to "trust him".

I finished my message and turned the screen towards Luke.

"You want to talk?" He widened his eyes as he read the sentence and sucked in a long breath. "Yeah actually, I want to talk to you too. I have a few things I want off my chest." He looked away from me down to the ground.

I felt this sinking feeling hit me in the gut.

I'm ready.

Tyler told me there was things he needed to say and I knew that this was coming. This could change everything, or nothing.

I'm ready.

This must be something huge. I reached over and held his hand. And I'll be with him all the way because I love Luke.

I really do.
