"You're sure you don't want to stay longer?" Craig begged me. "I don't think I can last alone with this guy." He gestured towards Tyler and I let out a small laugh.
"You're the one that offered to let him stay here!" I chuckled. Craig rubbed his forehead and sighed loudly.
"I guess you're right."
"You guys are talking like I'm not right here." Tyler huffed, crossing his arms and leaning into his hip. "Assholes." Craig and I let out a conjoined laugh at his behavior. Tyler just flipped us off and walked back into the house. I was going to say something else to Craig, but Ryan seemed unamused and grabbed my hand, yanking me away from the house.
"Woah, what's the rush Ry?" I asked as Craig yelled a loud goodbye behind us. Ryan didn't answer. He just kept his eyes in the direction we were going with his hand grasped tight around mine. It got to the point where if we were going any faster, we would be sprinting. "Seriously, what's wrong!" I said louder, almost tripping over an uneven piece of sidewalk. We got closer to my house and he rushed inside, shutting the door behind us and leading me to the couch. I followed, not that I had much choice, and sat down. He took a seat next to me and let out several short heavy breaths."Okay...now will you tell me why the hell we ran home?" Ryan took a few moments before picking up his phone and typing out a message. I couldn't see what it said while he was typing it but right before he hit send, I got a phone call.
It was Tyler.
I picked up the phone and answered with an unenthusiastic hello.
"Wow, good to talk to you too."
"I literally just saw you." I retorted, leaning back into the couch. Ryan seemed peeved at me for some reason. I avoided his icy gaze and kept Tyler on the phone. "What do you want?"
"I forgot to tell you about a weird newspaper article I found. I didn't want to tell you around the others. Mini went into the kitchen to clean up so I figured I'd call."
"I'm a little busy right now Tyler, can't this wait until tomorrow?" I groaned.
"Oh, I understand. Your new boyfriend comes before your best friend. I see." I rubbed my eyes and sat up.
"Bye Tyler."
"Rude ass..." I hung up before the rest of the curses came through the phone. I turned to see Ryan twisting his clothes in and out between his fingers. I reached out and pressed my thumb to his hands, rubbing slightly.
"What did you want to tell me?" I questioned sweetly, leaning into his side and relaxing when his head landed on my shoulder. Ryan lifted his phone up but set it back down quickly. I stared down at him with a brow lifted. He shook his head and reached for the television remote.
As his hand stretched out, he cringed and fell forward holding his side. I caught him by the waist and pulled his body back up towards me. His eyes were clenched shut, just like the hands on his stomach. "Are you okay?" He nodded his head yes and reached again, this time successfully grabbing the remote.
He turned it on and huddled up into my side. He grabbed onto my arm and played with my sleeves. After a few minutes of watching a random show I felt something grab at me from inside. The scene of him in the bathroom, slumped against the wall. The blood, the broken mirror.
The panic.
"Who was it?" I asked. Ryan seemed surprised by my sudden outburst. I set my head down on top of his. "Sorry, I was just thinking about earlier...the bathroom." At the end of my sentence Ryan tensed and crunched forward, pressing his legs up against me as well. I moved my arm out of his grasp and put it around the outer edge of his body, pulling him close to me. "I understand you don't want to talk about it. But it's killing me."
His breathing seemed to stop as he waited for the next words.
"Won't you tell me who it was?" I could hear the anger rise in my voice. I swallowed hard in a terrible attempt to calm myself down. My fists tightened and so did my protective arm around Ryan. He rubbed my head and traced my jawline down to my neck. After that his hand landed on my heart and pressed lightly. "I just want to know."
Ryan once again didn't respond. He didn't even glance at his phone to tell me. I felt a rage bubble up in my chest. How could he protect someone like that? I mean, I'm pretty sure I know who did it, and if it was him then why on Earth would Ry defend him?
"Dammit!" I yelled out slamming one of my fists into the couch. Ryan jumped up and scrambled away from me like a cat spooked from a bark. I unclenched my fist and ran it through my hair, leaning my forehead into my palms. "I'm sorry Ry. I'm so sorry, it's okay!" He kept a panicked posture and stared at me. "I guess I just don't understand why after all that ass has done to you, you won't tell me his name so I can beat him to a bloody fucking pulp." Once Ryan caught his scared breaths and regained composure, he slid slowly back next to me. This time he lifted his chin and pressed a light peck onto my frowning lips. His eyes sparkled, like he was proud of himself for doing that. I sighed and ruffled his hair, slightly smiling at him. "You're too good for me." I whispered. "Too good for this world." But I couldn't ignore that flame that lit in my chest, even as Ryan leaned back over me for more kisses it was still in the back of my mind.
I'll kill him. I'll kill that son of a bitch that hurt you.
