Heejin smiled. A new school. The sixth one in four years. Moving around was something she never really enjoyed, but it was normal. She'd been to so many schools, she can't even count them all. Her mom said it would be the last one for awhile. A long while.
She was already a junior, half way through her junior year. Her mom said they would probably be here for at least a year, maybe even more. She was smiling because she was happy. Happy that she would be staying at this school for quite awhile. Maybe even until she graduates.
She walked through the double glass doors and took in her surroundings. The school was small, but nice. It didn't seem like there were many students. The town was small, too. Everyone must know each other.
A few students passed by her and gave her a quick glance and kept walking, then stopped and looked back at her. They stared for a second, before turning back around and walking away. Heejin throught it was a little weird. The first look wasn't, but the second definitely surprised her.
She made her way to her first class. English. She was already pretty well studied up on the language. Her mom taught her it incase she ever needed it. She knew most of it, but the english teachers were always teaching her something new that she didn't know.
As she walked into the classroom, she got the same double take look from almost all of the students in the room. Only two didn't give her the crazy look. One was a girl with long, black hair, writing away in her notebook, her nose practically buried in it. The other was a boy, longer— but still short— brown hair. He was looking down at his desk, sitting by himself.
Heejin was intrigued by him. She wondered what could be running through his brain to make him seem so lonely. She didn't like seeing people lonely. It made her think about herself in many of the schools she's been to and how at some, she had no friends.
She figured there's no point in being lonely and began walking towards the boy's desk. She heard people suck in quick breaths. They weren't gasping— at least not yet— but she knew it would probably get there the closer she got to this boy. She stood in front of the desk and waited for the boy to look up.
"Hey, you seem lonely. Why?" Heejin asked, placing her hands firmly on the desk in front of the boy. When she got no response, she decided to sit down at the desk next to him. This is when she got gasps. "You don't have to be lonely."
"I'd rather be by myself." The boy mumbled, still not looking up.
Heejin pouted. It was upsetting her that she couldn't get anything out of this boy. "That's no fun. Are you only by yourself because people don't wanna be friends with you?"
"I said I'm fine." The boy growled, which came as a shock to Heejin, but she didn't show it. "Listen, just go away. I don't wanna hurt you. It'd be better if you get up and go sit somewhere else."
"Fine, but you can't ignore me forever." Heejin said, standing up and finding a new empty seat closer to the back.
The teacher walked in seconds later with a cup if coffee in hand. She sat down at her desk and took her glasses off, setting them down on the desk.
"Alright, we have a new student and a returnee." She began. "You all also have a new assignment. Partner work. I'm assigning your partners, so don't even start to plan anything."
All of the students groaned, but the teacher didn't waver. She only put her glasses back on and picked up a clipboard.
"This clipboard has the name of each set of partners. Since this class only has ten people in it, this was pretty easy to choose." The teacher said, holding the clipboard in front of her. "Hana and Jieun. Kiyoung and Mari. Donghyuck and Taekun. Younji and Heejin. Eunhae and Gunho. Those are your partners."
Heejin looked around the room, having no idea who Younji was. She noticed there were more girls than boys in the class.
"Now, I know Eunhae and Gunho are a thing or something. That's why I put you two together. Also because we have an uneven amount of boys and girls and so a boy had to go with a girl. I figured you two— who probably already spend massive amounts of time together— would be a perfect fit. But don't screw it up." The teacher stated, causing the couple to look at each other with heart eyes.
Heejin leaned forward and called for the boy from earlier. He turned around with an annoyed, emotionless look.
"Can you tell me who Younji is?" Heejin asked, smiling at the boy. He pointed at a girl closer to the front with shorter, brown hair. Heejin thanked the boy and he turned back around.
"Okay, class is over, just don't leave the room." The teacher spoke, taking her glasses off again. "Find your partners and pick up a paper from my desk that explains the assignment."
Heejin stood up and walked towards Younji. She didn't know anything about this girl except for her name, which made it all the more fun.
"Younji?" Heejin asked and the girl turned around with a smile. "I'm Heejin, your partner."
"Oh, Heejin! It's so nice to meet you!" Younji exclaimed, clasping her hands together. Heejin could already tell she was a happy and bubbly girl. She thought they would make great friends. "Let's be friends. Even after the assignment."
"Yes, let's be friends." Heejin replied, not being able to help the wide smile that formed on her face.
She was already making friends.
