"How's Guatemala?" She asked casually, leaning back in her chair.
"It's great. The kids are so inspirational," I smiled.
"You inspire them more," she grinned.
"How are you liking your art room?" I smirked knowingly.
"Oh my god, it's perfect! At first, I didn't know where to start! I'm working on something I'm sure you're going to love!" She said excitedly, her eyes glimmering. "Thank you so much again."
I waved my hand dismissively. "You really shouldn't be surprised at this point."
"I know, but still!" She was practically bouncing in her seat. "Talk about best present ever! You're the best!"
"I know," I shrugged arrogantly, putting my hands behind my head. She rolled her eyes and giggled.
"When I told my friends about it they flipped! The looks on their faces were absolutely priceless! Like you had to be there," She said energetically through the computer screen. Too cute.
"They're gonna have some high expectations for their boyfriends," I chuckled.
"I know right!"
I decided to change the topic. "So how's the project coming along?"
She rolled her eyes and sighed.
"What's wrong? Something not going right?" I asked, concerned.
"The actually project is fine, but it's Jeffrey," She sighed again. I was immediately irritated at the mentioning of his name.
"Sorry," She said, quickly noticing my reaction. "'He who shall not be named.'"
"Go on," I nodded.
"Well, I feel like he's been acting... different," She looked down and twisted her fingers unsurely.
"Like a bad different?" I furrowed my eyebrows.
"Just a weird different. I feel like he knows something or he's hiding something from me that I probably should know," She shrugged, looking back up at me.
"What would he be hiding from you?"
"I don't know! But something's up with him."
"Well when you figure it out, I better be the first to hear about it."
"Oh absolutely!"
"Justin!" I heard an outside voice.
"And that's my cue," Justin sighed.
"Okay," I gave him a little smile. "You go do what you gotta do. I'll see you in a couple of days superstar."
"Bye beautiful. You are the light in my world and I don't deserve someone as amazing as you, but I've been blessed. I just want to remind you as much as I can that I love you to the moon and back, forever and always, no matter what, and I'll always be there for you when you need me," I smiled.
"Oh gosh, Justin!" She blushed deeply. "I love you too," She returned it and then signed off.
Another pain struck through me. This time it was the mixture of the guilt I have every time I saw her and thus being reminded that my dirty little secret is reality and not just a dream and the anxiety knowing that I have to do it the next time I see her in person, which will probably be the last time as well. For the time being, I'm just trying to cherish every moment I get to hear her voice and see her beautiful smile.
Every time I think of living my life without her, I want to shoot myself because it's that hard. I know she told me to not be so dependent on her and to trust in myself before another person, but that's what you risk when you become so emotionally invested in someone; your sanity. You risk your stability, mentally and possibly physically. You let your guard down knowing that you're now an open target and that person has a clear shot of they choose to take it. And that's what I've done to Katie; I've taken that shot. If I could reverse it I could. But what's done is done and consequences will follow.
