I gripped the steering wheel with intense force, my stomach churning like a pot of boiling water. Saying I was nervous is an understatement. I was petrified! Why? I don't know. I guess meeting my girlfriend's parents is scary in general. After they were hospitalized, they were taken to visit some of their worried family members in Mexico, and here I was now ready to pick them up.
I pulled into the airport and found a parking spot. I looked around before I put on a hat and dark sunglasses. Causing a scene in the airport would not end well for me.
I shakily walked into the building, filled with bustling people trying to get from one place to another. As I was approaching my designation, a little girl pulled at my arm.
"Excuse me, sir?"
"How can I help you, sweetie?" I kneeled down and smiled at her.
"I'm sorry to bother you, but I'm lost," This little girl seemed to only know French. [a/n he is also talking to her in French and the translations will be bolded and italicized]
"Lost? Where are your parents?"
"I don't know, and I'm really scared," She started to cry.
"Nonono princess. I promise I'll find your parents."
"Really?"
"Yes, ma'am. Where was the last place you saw your parents?"
"Well, I am from Paris, France. This is my first time in America. My parents and I came here for a better life with more economic and educational opportunities and I have seemed to loose them getting off the airplane. No one here speaks French so I got really worried."
"Well you won't have to worry anymore, beautiful. C'mon," I stood up and held my hand out for her to grab. She smiled and quickly did so. I approached the agent's desk, ignoring the other people in line.
"Hey man, you gotta wait your turn!" One man yelled out.
"This is an emergency!" I called back to him.
"Excuse me, ma'am. Look I found this lost little girl," I picked her up and rested her on my hip. "She doesn't know where her parents are and she only speaks French."
"Oh okay. Well I only speak English and Spanish, so would you mind calling her parents on this speaker back here?" She motioned me behind the desk.
"Of course. What's your full name, sweetheart?" I turned my attention to the little girl. She had wavy brown hair up to her shoulders and bright green eyes. She wore a dark blue beret with a red little tail on the top, a blue and white striped shirt, dark blue pants, and black Mary Jane flats.
"Aimee-Marie Debois," She replied.
"That's a beautiful name for a beautiful girl," I smiled at her. "I'm going to call your parents on the loudspeaker so they can come get you. Are you okay with that?"
She nodded.
I went to the speaker behind the desk.
"Attention the parents of Aimee-Marie Debois. We found your daughter and we are at the front desk of gate c. If anyone has information on her parents, please report to the desk as well. Thank you. L'attention des parents d'Aimee-Marie Debois. Nous avons trouvé votre fille et nous sommes à la réception de la porte c. Si quelqu'un a des informations sur ses parents, veuillez vous rendre au bureau aussi bien. Merci," I said the message in English and French.
"You can sit at the seats over there while you wait for her parents," The agent smiled.
"No problem," I walked over to the line of chairs and sat down, Aimee-Marie next to me.
