Confused - Chapter 5

"That's a pretty good movie," I say after the credits start. Josh smiles uncertainly.

"Yeah, cause I'm in it," he laughs. I roll my eyes.

"What are we going to do now?" I ask, picking up the empty noodle cups and wrappers. Josh tries to help.

"I got it," I reassure him. He frowns and sits back down. I walk into the kitchen and throw all the rubbish away.

I turn around and Josh is standing in the doorway.

"Yes?" I ask, laughing.

"Are you busy tonight?"

"No.." I answer slowly. He quietly sighs in relief.

"Why?" I ask, unsure of what he has in mind.

"Jakob is--" I groan at the mention of Jakob's name. "Jakob is having a party at his house at like ten, wanna come?" he continues, "Addie's gonna be there," he adds quickly, as if I already said no.

"Okay, sure," I accept his offer.

"But did Jakob even ask me?" I ask, unsure again.

"Yeah, he called me before. I said you'd probably say yes," Josh winks at me.

"Well, then, I'm going to call Grace. You totally butted in last time. Don't come in or I'll lock the door!" I rush upstairs and whip my phone out of my pocket.

"Hello?" a familiar voice coos through the phone.

"Hey Grace," I greet her.

"What happened before, why did you just hang up on me?" she asks curiously. I roll my eyes.

"Josh heard his name and came scampering," I laugh, looking outside my room again, just in case.

"Aw, he's so cute," Grace comments. I can just imagine her clasping her hands together and fluttering those long lashes. I laugh.

"Off that topic. Lets not talk about Josh anymore and just.. well stop," I say. Grace giggles.

"It's too hard!" she whines.

"No it's not!" I bark back, snickering. Grace gives up.

"Fine. Anyway, how is the Hutchie's? Like honestly?" she asks, squealing.

"It's.. strange. Josh has been acting really weird," I say truthfully. She squeals again. I stand up and shut the door, then I lie down on my bed.

"Go on!" Grace urges me for more information.

"He.. just.. Okay. So the first day morning I was here, he got really upset about me hugging Con, and Connor told me that he talked about me all summer. I don't know if he was kidding or not, but Josh like literally dragged him out of the room," I gasp for breath, "Then when I was trying to get into his mac, I was just joking around and I typed in my name. And it worked. I was so shocked, and when I called him, he called me babe. It was probably a mistake, because he was like, 'See ya soon babe, I mean Gen, Gen,' Oh help me Grace, I'm so confused!" I yelp. Grace gasps.

"OH MY GOSH HE'S SOO IN LOVE WITH YOU! THAT'S SO CUTE! Although he's meant to be mine, but who cares? Do you like him too?" she shrieks.

"I-- I don't know. I'll see. Hey, I gotta go get ready for some party of Josh's friend's. I'll talk to you soon," I say, thinking about the previous events. I hang up and stare out the window.

He forgot he called me babe. It obviously means that it was clearly a mistake. He probably thought he was talking to his girlfriend or something. If he has one... I sit on my bed, knees clutched to my chest, confused thoughts racing through my very confused mind. I exhale, trying to breathe out all my problems.

"Gen? Geeeen?" a voice ushers me awake. My eyes flutter open. I find myself staring into Josh's eyes.

"Wow, she wakes," Josh murmurs, brushing some hair off my face. I sit up slowly.

"What time is it?" I yawn, stretching. Josh shrugs.

"I just know we better get to Jake's," he says. Wow, is it that late? I sit up

"Well get out then. I'm going to get changed," I stand up and walk to my wardrobe.

"Aw can't I stay?" he asks innocently. I walk back and pull him out.

"When I see flying pixies then you're welcome anytime," I answer, laughing. I shut the door and pull some dresses out of my cupboard.

I walk down stairs in my white, see-through flowing skirt, black shorts underneath of course, and a white tank top, tucked into the skirt. I top it off with my black ballet flats. Josh is sitting on the bottom step, texting.

"Rawr!" I scare him, making him jump. He turns around, grinning. Then he sees me.

"You look really.. nice," he comments, standing up and biting his lip.

"Thanks.." I thank him awkwardly. There's a long pause.

"Let's go?" I break the silence, walking to the door.

"Oh.. yeah.. let's.. go," I follow Josh to his car and I hop in.

"Gen?" Josh asks as we're driving.

"Yeah?"

"You know how you were teasing me about liking Addie before?"

I snort, "Yep,"

"Well, it's not Addie, no offence to her, it's someone else, she's beautiful, funny, reliable, every single word in the nice dictionary, and I like her. Like a lot. But I don't think she likes me. What do I do?"

I inhale and force myself to smile. It has to be why he called me babe. He must've mixed me up for this dream girl.

"Aw, that's so cute! I'm not teasing, I swear," I reassure him, "Maybe you should talk to her, but don't move into things so suddenly. You have to take your time, and slowly approach her. Then you guys can end up a couple and love happily ever after," I advise him. He gives me funny look.

"What? You asked for advice," I snap. Josh shakes his head.

"Thanks," he answers shakily. I bite my lip and look away from his gaze.

"Here it is," Josh says suddenly. I look up and my jaw drops open. A huge house, maybe a bit smaller than Josh's, stands in front of me. I stare up at the huge windows and the brass door.

"You sure we got the right house?"

Josh snorts, "Yes, Gen. Chill," he reaches out and gives my hand a reassuring squeeze. I relax and loosen my tensed shoulders.

"Josh?" I grab his hand and pull him back.

"Yeah?"

"You won't leave me this time will you?" I ask, biting my lip. Josh pulls me into a hug. I snuggle into his warm chest. We stay like this for a couple of minutes.

"Don't worry. I'll actually stay with you this time. If I break my promise then.. I have to be your servant for a week, deal?" he convinces me. I grin and we walk into the huge house.
