Sitting in hallway. Near bathrooms. Smells like cleaning products. Too lazy to move.

Post-English class reflection: After we got through introductions, we talked about the books we'd be reading this semester: King Lear followed by Chuck Palahniuk's Choke, then the Charles' Dickens novel Great Expectations, followed by the Bret Easton Ellis novel Less than Zero. Before all that, we started off with a short story by Kafka—Mr. Vincenzo's favourite author. I've never read Kafka, but Dad's mentioned him.

Mr. Vincenzo handed out printouts with the title The Metamorphosis on them: apparently Kafka's most popular short story. He explained that it was about an ordinary guy named Gregor Samsa (sick name) who wakes up one morning as a gigantic insect.

His family is repulsed (can you blame them???)

We did a read-aloud. Round Robin. Like elementary school. Sweet.

Mr. Vincenzo called upon "Beth." Dark-haired, gage-wearing beauty queen looked up, nodded and started reading.

Her name is Beth. That's a beginning.
