The seconds seem to drag on as you hear Sarah's slightly distorted voice through the phone. You are barely processing the information, to you it just feels like her words are meaningless.
"Drugs... His family used to traffic them when times got rough."
From then on it was like you turned deaf. The only thing you could hear was the same word, hammering over and over again in your head.
Drugs
When you heard there were drugs in the house you convinced yourself it had nothing to do with him. But now there was no avoiding it.
"No... No, he couldn't have been involved. He wouldn't..." You manage to get out in between sobs.
Ella and Blake finish up the call with Sarah while the others try to comfort you but you just feel so betrayed. Like you painted a perfect picture of Kaiden but now it's stained.
"So uh..." Blake starts. "Sarah said his parents used to traffic when they needed quick money. She suspects they consumed too. Kaiden didn't agree with it though and refused to help them at first but eventually his family started receiving threats over text, phone call, even letters... Apparently Sarah's parents overheard them discussing that this once and immediately made them cut ties, to the point where they moved away. Kaiden sweared never to get close with someone again because he was too afraid of them finding out."
A heavy silence washes over the group, until Roxy breaks it.
"Well, and how can that help us?"
"Don't you see? That guy at the police station, he must be Kaiden's father. Got into a fight or something about the drugs got too heated, punches kicks that kind of thing, and his chain breaks. Though Kaiden eventually wins and leaves his father unconscious at the beach, then runs." Kai explains.
"It's a theory..." Interrupts Harley. "Though why wouldn't he come back? Or pick up any calls? He wouldn't be sentenced if they knew his parents made him do it would he?"
"Maybe we're missing something..."
