"Three moons, at this rate we'll never report back to the General," Coontail muttered to himself, slicing a reed into neat halves. Mink was contently chewing on the poultice she'd been given, nodding in agreement.
Two scrawny rabbits swinging from their jaw, Mossy shuffled through the reeds with a strange look on their face. "We've sucked this place dry of animals," they commented, giving their unsibs the food. "Eat; then we can finally move."
Too weary and tired to care about its size, Coontail ate his rabbit in three small bites. Mink, who slowly swallowed what she'd been eating before, gnawed on her prey's meat for a little longer.
"Y'know, I found a dead SandWing over there," Mossy announced, pointing behind themselves. "Their barb was severed from their tail."
Coontail sighed, too tired to snap at his unsib. "Why do I care again?"
Mossy thought for a moment.
"You don't."
Mink yawned, the warm flames of the fire fanning her scales and making her sleepy. "Who's the night watch tonight?" she asked as she curled in her (now familiar) bed of reeds.
"It's Coontail's turn, but I can take over," Mossy offered. "You guys should sleep."
With a faint grumble of 'I didn't want to do it anyway,' Coontail agreed, "Yeah, okay. Don't kill me in my sleep, mystery killer."
Xe grinned. "Don't worry, I won't," xe whispered to the air.
Soft choking noises at dawn woke Mink.
"Coontail?" she muttered, squinting the rapidly appearing light of the sun. "Are you okay?"
No response.
Worry heightened, Mink rubbed the blurriness out of her eyes and was met with the bright green eyes of Mossy.
They stood over Coontail's body, a shadowy blob in their talons and a maniacal grin fixed on their snout. Something was wrong; thin black veins crept towards Coontail's heart, exploding from a bloody stab wound on his neck. They were spreading to the rest of his body like drying mud, slowing down more and more until they stayed put.
"I didn't kill you, did I?" Mossy laughed to Coontail. "It was the SandWing. I didn't do it, I didn't kill you. That SandWing did it. I can accuse them. I can- I can report back and say you were all killed by a stupid meddlesome SandWing."
Quiet as a tadpole in water, Mink slid away, each movement as agonizingly slow as the last. She was about to disappear into the reeds when Mossy glanced up.
"Oh, Mink, Mink, Mink, little tiny Mink," Mossy sang, stalking towards their unsib. "Minky, how are you? Did you enjoy the slaughter?"
Mink whipped her head from side to side as she unfurled her wings, panic bleeding into her voice. "No, I didn't, and I hate you! I hate you! Y- you tried to manipulate me; I kind of thought you we- were telling me the truth. But you lied!"
Mossy tilted their head to the side, still clutching the severed barb. "I'm not the only one at fault. You were the one who chose to believe me. That's your own fault."
"Well, it doesn't matter now, does it? I'm going to report you to the Queen, and she'll throw you in the dungeons!" Turning as quickly as she could, Mink flew off the ground in one powerful beat of her wings, her mind set on the idea of justice.
Mossy watched from the ground. Let her go. It's not like anyone will believe her. A grin stretching their lips wide, Mossy walked away and buried Coontail's body.
COONTAIL was murdered. He was the HEALER.
MINK was healed and therefore escaped. She was the INVESTIGATOR.
MOSSY has won the game. They were the KILLER.
