MudWings; Night 2

Frog dreamed of mud. 

Warm, oozing mud that dripped from their back and slithered down their talons, painted in the aches of their wings and slathered on the underside of their snout. 

Delta was there too, scolding them for stealing his. . .trout? Wait, what? 

Frog jerked awake, bleary-eyed. The fire had died out long ago, leaving the campsite in complete darkness. Not even the moon accented the reeds surrounding the unsib group. Silence reigned, its shadowy grip blanketing the air. 

Then something quiet sliced through the quiet. Something. . .strange. 

"One was for betrayal of trust, second had become part mud and rust. Third was an accident, a mistake, and you shall be the rule I'm meant to break." 

Frog shifted uncomfortably. Who's the night watch again? "—, are you singing?" 

Xe smiled. 

"—?" Frog repeated, their brow furrowed. "Are you awake?" 

"Yeah, sorry. I found something really cool! Come check it out!" xe whispered, excitement lilting xyr voice. 

How do I. . .know you're not the killer? Frog wondered. You could be luring me over to kill me. 

"I'm fine," they replied with a shrug. "Really tired right now." 

"But- but Frog, please. No one else will pay attention to it. They say I'm being- I'm being too childish. I'm not, I promise!" 

Urgh. I just want to sleep and avoid psycho dragons. Is that too much to ask for? 

Heaving themselves up, Frog walked over to where xe was. "I want to go to sleep. What is it?" they asked bluntly. 

"You will, don't worry," xe sighed, then pulled out a black swamp snake's head. "I found it near Acacia's body!" 

Frog growled. "Amazing. I don't care. Can I go to sleep?" 

Xe smiled again. "Sure." 

Finally, I can get away fr— 

The snake head instantly discarded, — lunged at Frog, all of xyr weight heaved against them. 

Frog, caught unaware, stumbled and snarled, "Oh, that's just great." 

"Ah, ah, ah," xe murmured, xyr talons finding their way to Frog's throat. "Corpses don't talk." 

"Stop, y—!" 

Frog fell, their khaki eyes staring at xyr face. Blood erupted from a deep gash in their neck, slathered on the underside of their snout. 

"One was for betrayal of trust, second had become part mud and rust. Third was an accident, a mistake, and you have become the rule I break." 

— giggled to xyrself as xe washed the blood of their talons, humming the same tune as xe curled into xyr pile of reeds, head facing Frog's body. 

And. . .now! 

"Frog!" xe roared, jumping up. Xe raced to xyr unsib's dead body, sobbing, "Three moons, Frog! No!" 

FROG has been murdered. They had PDD. 

SHALLOW and MOSSY have been accused by the INVESTIGATOR.
