A figure leaned on the windowsill. "It's a shame. They could have just come along."
"Alex, you said you'd kill them." A silhouette crossed their arms behind them.
"Nuh-uh. I said I might kill them. They're two very different things."
"'Might' still leaves room for interpretation."
"Interpretation such as?"
"You were gonna kill them."
A breathy chuckle escaped Alex's mouth. "And? Maybe I was. D'you got a problem with that?" They turned, eyes faintly glowing red in the growing moonlight.
"Of course not. But they do. They're human, after all - " The second shadow ignored the smirk that shown on the other's face. " - but they also will probably want to, I don't know, "protect the kingdom" or some shit like that."
A sigh emanated from Alex's mouth as he turned. "It's not that hard to understand. There's nothing here worth protecting in the first place."
"No shit. You just killed the king and prince."
"They aren't dead yet, calm down."
"They're as good as dead."
"Can't argue with that."
"Exactly. Now stop being dramatic and get down from there."
Alex stepped away from the window and scanned the halls, squinting in the dim lighting, before beginning to stride across the floor. "We've got some searching to do."
"Why?"
"She gave someone a key."
"A key or the key?"
"If my assumptions are correct," a smile slid onto Alex's face as he reached into his pocket and withdrew a small, silver key on a string of leather. "then we've just discovered the newest owner of the second Key of Thieves."
