April was sitting on the counter and Noah was leaning against it. Neither spoke for a while.
"What if they're hurt?" April blurted suddenly. "What if they were caught? What if they were blocked?"
Noah looked over. "Chrysie'll be okay." He glanced towards the ground. "They're smart. Even with their power, they'll probably just stay hidden anyway. And I find it unlikely that they'll figure out they have one, anyway."
"What's to stop Alex, or Ryan, or Aki, or someone from telling Chrysie what to do?"
Noah paused. "I don't know."
"I'm scared, Noah." April whispered. "You could die, or Chrysie could die, or any one of us could die." She took in a shaky breath. "We might not win this time."
"Hey. Look at me." Noah grabbed her hand. "I promised to do whatever I could to keep everyone safe. I'll keep that promise for the rest of my life."
"Who'd you promise that to?"
Noah glanced away. "Unimportant. The point is, I'm going to try my best to make sure every single person makes it out of this alive and unhurt. Including Chrysie."
April launched herself at Noah, hugging him tightly. "If you promised that, then can you promise me something too?"
"Of course."
"Don't do anything stupid or anything that would get you hurt, okay?" She hesitated, voice low. "I don't want to lose you, either."
"Alright. I promise."
"I love you."
"Love you, too."
