Interrupted

"Why didn't you guys tell me?" I asked Ace, Lei and Tonia who were in front of me right now. They were sitting on the couch and I was standing in front of them.

They all looked sorry and guilty. I pursed my lips and placed both my hands on my waists. I waited for them to speak up, but they all remained quiet, not wanting to say anything.

"Ace," I called but she just looked away. I turned to Lei. "Lei?" Then to Tonia. "Tonia." I uttered a curse before speaking up again. "Wala ba talaga kayong balak i-explain sa akin?"

"Do you want me to go and ask my father then?" I asked at akmang aalis na nang higitin ako bigla ni Ace. I glared at her pero ngumiwi lang siya.

"Sorry, Tinay," she said.

I removed her hand from its grip on my wrist and turned to face her. I crossed my arms against my chest and looked at her eyes directly. "Explain," I demanded.

I saw her pursed her lips before talking. "We didn't tell you because we didn't want you to come back and suffer again," she explained. "Also, Tito Ignacio asked us not tell you anything about Jacob," she added. I sighed and rolled my eyes in irritation.

"You lied to us, Tinay," mabilis na nalipat kay Lei ang tingin ko. She stood up and went to me. "I believed in you when you told me you're okay now, pero hindi pa rin pala. You lied to me, to us."

"Yes, and I lied to myself. I fucking lied to myself, Lei. Kasi akala ko rin okay na ako. Akala ko okay na na bumalik ako dito para kausapin siya at humingi ng tawad sa kaniya. That's why I came back!" I couldn't help it anymore. "I didn't come back here to win him again. Hindi ako tanga para umalis at bumalik dito para lang angkinin ulit siya because I fucking knew that he was never mine in the first place!" I shouted. "I just wanted him to know how sorry and guilty I was and still am for leaving him and causing him to be caught in that fucking accident!"

"Tinay," Ace tried to reach for my hand pero hinawi ko 'yon.

"Don't," I said at tuluyan nang umalis sa lugar na 'yon.

I went inside my car and roared the engine to life at nag-drive na ako papunta sa company. Mabilis akong bumaba sa kotse ko pagka-park ko sa parking lot. I walked towards the elevator and went inside it. Hinintay kong makataas 'yon.

Pagkabukas na pagkabukas ng elevator ay tumambad sa akin si Archt. Mariano. I think he was about to enter the elevator and he was shocked when he saw me. He moved back a little bit para makalabas ako ng elevator.

I went out of the elevator and walked past him. I didn't look at him again. Dumiretso lang akong naglakad papunta sa office ko para ilapag ang mga gamit ko. However, when I was about to open the door of my office, someone grabbed me by my wrist. But I knew already who that was.

I know the feeling of his hand. Buong buhay ko ba namang laging nahahawakan 'yon, hindi ko pa kaya masaulo ang ganoong pakiramdam?

I was so tempted to turn and face him, but I did not. Instead, I removed his grip on my wrist without even glancing at him. I opened the door of my office pero hindi pa man ako nakakapasok ay bigla na naman niya akong hinila but this time, he made me face him.

I saw pain and confusion in his eyes. But what I do not understand the most is the pain I saw. And I suddenly wondered, bakit na naman? Why is he making that pained expression?

"Why, Archt. Mariano?" I asked him in defeat.

"Okay lang ka ba?" He worriedly asked and I could feel my heart throbbing inside again.

"Yes, of course. Now if you do not mind, I'm going to go and work now," I said politely. He did not let go of my wrist, though. His hold remained firm which made me sigh. "Can you let go of me, please?" I said as I looked away.
