Reader's POV

"(Y/n) dear, come along now we haven't got all day." My father called out from across the hall.

I was currently accompanying him along with my brother and some of his workers' children as he and his boss gave a tour of the building he worked in. My father had an odd job. He was somewhat of an inventor and scientists, but he and his team also studied a lot of the 'unnatural.'

I was partially the reason my father seemed to work in this field. On October 1st, 1989, my mother gave birth to me without any signs that she'd been pregnant beforehand. Despite my father's confusion as to what caused this, he treated me as he did my older brother. That is, until one faithful day we discovered I had a peculiar set of gifts.

When I was seven years old my brother and I had been playing around and throwing pillows at each other when all of a sudden they weren't hitting me anymore. That's when I realized I had created some sort of shield around myself without knowing it. Being a kid, I almost immediately began to panic, causing my father to run into the room and thus began the change in our relationship. He spent more time with me, helping me figure out my abilities and taking note which areas I needed improvement in. Dad has told me he was always put off at the idea of bringing me into work to be tested, so our training sessions happened at home or in rented out gyms until he was felt I was old enough to train with  Mr. Hargreeves, a family friend, and his children.

The tour wasn't incredibly entertaining. Most of the rooms we passed, we weren't allowed entry due to whatever was going on in them.

"In this room to our left, is where we store preserved lifeforms. Some of which most of you have never seen before. This room is strictly off limits." Dad's worker informed us. "Now let's continue..."

After walking for a bit more my brother raised his hand.

"Sorry to interrupt but could I use the restroom?" He asked

My father sighed, "Alright, make it quick. Do you remember where it is?"

My brother laughed sheepishly.

"(Y/n), show your brother where the bathroom is then meet us on the next floor up."

I nodded then linked arms with my brother and walked off.

"The bathroom is over there," I pointed, "do you want me to wait for you outside?"

My brother removed his arm from mine and began to walk in a different direction.

"Where are you going?"

"To explore. Come on, we can take a better look around on our own." He smiled.

We were mischievous kids at heart. I quickly returned his smile and ran to catch up with him.

We came across the room in which they kept the preserved creatures.

"...Wanna take a closer look at those monsters?" My brother suggested.

I fidgeted with the hem of my jacket.

"I don't know, how would we even get inside?"

My brother pulled our dad's access card out of his pocket triumphantly.

"You didn't." I gasped.

"I totally did!" He snickered, "Let's go."

He held the card up to the scanner and the door creaked open eerily. The room was dimly lit, majority of the light coming from the clear tanks the creature where held in.
