Reader's POV
"Mom," Diego called out, "You okay?" He placed a hand on her shoulder.
Grace smiled with a dazed and far out expression, "Of course I am."
Diego and I frowned, "You didn't hear the noises? The guys in the mask that just shot up the house?"
"You didn't hear any of it?" I asked.
Grace chuckled softly and glaced up at us, "What are talking about, silly?"
Diego's eyes fell to Grace's cross stitch, which was going horribly wrong. She had accidentally sewn into her own hand. Diego's expression grew solemn, and I immediately understood what was going through his mind. He got up and knelt down in front of Grace, his breath shaking heavily.
"Diego? What are you doing?"
Diego didn't reply as he slid a knife across Grace's left arm, revealing her circuits and power source.
He opened his mouth to speak, but couldn't form any words. "It's gonna be o--" He began to sniffle softly.
"Remember what we worked on. Just picture the word in your mind." Grace encouraged.
"It's gonna be okay..." he stuttered as he twisted something in Grace's arm, "...Mom."
Grace whirred and her limbs fell lifelessly. "Di-e-go... Re-mem... ber."
Diego watched as the blue light in her eyes faded away. Tears fell steadily down his face and he turned to me.
Tears began to form in my own eyes from watching him. "Why?" I breathed out as I looked up at him.
"It had to be done." He said, voice cracking ever so slightly. "(Y/n)... don't tell the others."
I nodded without questioning his reasons, "I won't."
Diego hung his head in grief and I pulled him in for a hug. Again, nostalgia washed over me, as if I was reliving a moment from our childhood. Diego was all grown now, but the familiar feeling of holding him years ago still lingered. He begrudgingly pulled away from me and walked downstairs.
I lingered next to Grace for a bit longer and admired her never aging features. Even if she was just a robot, the love she held for the Hargreeves felt so real, and I always admired her for that. As a kid, I sometimes secretly wished Mr. Hargreeves had actually adopted me so I could've had the privilege of saying Grace was my mom too. Then again, things would've been so different if that actually happened.
I smiled at Grace one last time before finally leaving. I looked around for Klaus first, due to him being the only sibling I didn't see during the attack, but couldn't find him anywhere. I considered checking on Luther, but judging by how he ran away earlier I suspected he didn't want to be bothered at the moment. I sighed and made my way back downstairs. In the living room sat Allison by herself on the couch.
"Where's Vanya?" I inquired.
Allison looks up and sighed, "She uhm... left."
Allison looked a bit upset, but I chose to leave her be for the time being. It had been a pretty hectic night, and maybe Vanya just needed to go home and calm her nerves. I looked up at the clock hanging from the wall and read the time.
