Reader's POV

Flashback

Klaus stood to the side with one arm holding Allison as she cradled her left arm. He examined his wrist with a painful expression as Allison sobbed to herself quietly. Klaus wiped away tears of his own and did his best to avert his eyes away from Diego, who sat in the the cold, black chair as the tattoo artist worked away at his wrist.

His expression was full of pain as he clenched the armrest with his right hand. Their mom attempted to sooth him but he quickly moved his arm away in an attempt to act tough, but I knew just as well as the others he was on the verge of tears.

My eyes shifted to the other boys sitting in lined up chairs. Luther's  gaze was centered on Allison and I could tell he was fuming with anger. Ben, who sat next to him, looked around with a frightened expression. He swallowed hard and turned his gaze to where Vanya and I stood watching on the stairs. I offered him a smile, which he did his best to return. This did not change the fact that he was still terrified. Even Five had a worried expression painted across his face. His legs trembled slightly and he refused to loosen his grip on his chair.

I had been lucky enough to have been spared from the pain of receiving a tattoo and instead watched with Vanya as my friends suffered. The timid girl pulled out a black market and rolled down her sleeve. She began drawing the outline of an unbrella, the symbol in which the other Hargreeves were receiving on their wrists.

I couldn't help but feel sorry for Vanya. Although she'd never admit it, I knew that the constant belittling from her father and being left out always made her feel lonely, even if the activity was something as terrible as getting a tattoo.

"Could you do my wrist too?" I asked as she finished up.

She nodded and I held out my arm to her. She was overall a genuine, sweet girl. In a way, she reminded me of my brother. I was no idiot, I knew he envied the special attention I got from our dad, and I tried to make up for it by spending as much time as I could with him at home.

__________

"They're finished." Vanya nudged me.

We watched as the tattoo artist cleaned up his station and packed up to leave as her siblings headed towards the stairs in our direction. We graciously moved out of the way and allowed them to pass by without a word.

Vanya and I retreated to her room and I sat on her bed as she took her violin out.

"I'm worried about them." I said.

Vanya smiled softly, "I know, (Y/n). Go check on them if you want, I'll be here."

"Are you okay with that?"

Vanya nodded, "If anyone can cheer them up it's you."

I exited her room and looked around the hall, debating which sibling I should check on first. Soft sniffles where heard from the left of me, and I immediately knew who they were coming from.

I gently knocked on Diego's door, "It's (Y/n)."

Some shuffling was heard from inside before Diego opened the door. His eyes were glassy and red, he refused to look up at me.
