Erwin never imagined back then that one person could so drastically change his life. One person would put all sorts of new colors into his life, another would take that all away. It was as if he had glimpsed at the bright gates of heaven, only to drop down and be stuck in a miserable hell. And the worst part was knowing that nothing would change, this was his infinite fate. He was alone, and he'd die just like that. Alone; with no one that cared for him. You, on the other hand, had a life of fulfillment, and because of that, he supposed that he was content with his fate. He did love you after all, and he vowed always to protect you.

When he met you at age 15, you were just a naïve child, unexposed to the darkness of being a soldier in the Survey Corps. And you had that smile on your face, one he was sure would disappear after your first expedition. But it didn't. Not that you were an over-optimistic fool, but you never lost that inner joy that made you start fighting in the first place. To Erwin, you were a bright flame in the darkness of his life, so over time, he found himself growing rather fond of you. He enjoyed your company so much, he even invited you to make tea for him and others during the meetings in his office. You made a damn good cup of tea, and Erwin even noticed how you always put a little bit more in his cup than Mike's. Little did he know, you filled up Levi's even more.

It started off as just an innocent crush on you, enjoying your eyes, your smile, your smell, and everything else about you. The commander had no one to hold him at night, releasing these pent up emotions he held inside for no one to see. You were just so damn perfect, and this caused him to be hesitant about confessing his feelings to this attractive 20-year-old girl. He could face a titan with virtually no fear, but telling you how happy you made him was a completely different story. Ironically, on the day he considered telling you all of this when you brought him tea, he found you sitting at the superior table. With Levi.

Turns out the two of you had become rather close lately, and a kiss on your lips was all that was needed to tell you what he felt for you. You were a shining star in someone else's world now, and although he tried not to show it, he was hurt. He had to watch you, kissing another man's cheek. He had to watch you, sitting and talking on another man's desk. He had to watch you, fall in love with another. Levi was never one to show you much public affection, but when he did, somehow Erwin always had the misfortune of viewing you either holding hands or kissing tenderly. And this, this wasn’t even the worst part. But even with you in another man's arms, he still vowed to always protect you.

    "...You're pregnant?"

"Yeah!" you spoke with sweet rose stained cheeks.

"Ah...well, I'm very happy for you both. Congratulations."

With his words, Erwin forced on a seemingly sincere smile, despite being absolutely shattered inside. Not only had you come to love another man, that love had manifested into physical intimacy, and because of it, you now had a life, his life, inside of you.

"Thanks Erwin! Even if he may not act like it, Levi's really excited about it too. I wonder if it's a boy or a girl...,"

You continued to ramble on and on about the child that had brought him so much grief. While Erwin was off being surrounded by failure and death, Levi got to experience the miracle of helping bring new life into the world. A child, something Erwin could only dream about. You would eventually give birth to that child and care for it with love alongside Levi. But what about him? Where was his happy ending? Where was something to make up for this pain? The sad truth was, things only got worse from there on out.

The wedding was beautiful, he had to admit. You looked so damn beautiful in that gown, a small baby bump showing through the shimmering white fabric. Was he in the back, watching his undoing from a distance? Oh no, he was the best man, having to watch the woman he loved marry his ex-thug co-worker right before his eyes. He tried so hard to mask his hurt during the whole ceremony, but his façade broke when you kissed your new husband, and Erwin had to look away. It was pure torture having to watch this unfold before him, but the smile on your face meant more than having you for himself.

That night, Erwin contemplated his entire existence and life choices all too harshly. He was the commander of a large military organization, had a kind smile, and more love for you than he could ever express in words. Why? Why couldn't you see this? Why did you love Levi and not him? Was there something wrong with him? The questions went unanswered as insomnia engraved itself into his features. He supposed he wasn't good enough for you, and he never would be.

A son, a beautiful and healthy baby boy. You held him tenderly in your arms when Erwin came to congratulate the two of you, Levi at your side, staring lovingly into the face of his child. Jealousy, pure and green envy filled his entire being. The two of you still had so much happiness down the road with this child, while Erwin's life was at a stagnant nothing. He had nothing to look forward to for the rest of his days, forced to watch the child you and Levi created grow up. But, as much as he felt like breaking down, he saw how absolutely happy you were with your new life. So, for you, he tried to be happy too.

The child grew up, and eventually so did two others. You and Levi loved those kids unconditionally, growing in love everyday your family was together. Erwin knew things would never change for him, but when he looked into the eyes of your children, the ones with your dazzling eyes, he felt happiness. They all held your beauty and that smile of yours he so loved. And as Survey Corps members now, he vowed to protect each and every one of them with his life. Because they were you, and he vowed that he'd always protect you.

That's why he jumped in the last second to save your daughter from sliding down the throat of a titan. With the quickest speed manageable, he flew inside the mouth of that nasty creature to pull her to you safely. As soon as she received freedom from death, Erwin met his, and accepted it with no regret. Your child was safe, and that's all he cared about. So, for him, that was enough for him to feel purpose in his life. Because he had protected you, and what you loved.
