Jennifer and Kola had finished eating their meal and were having dessert; a red velvet cake.
"Kola, when you stopped coming to school about a week after I sent that letter, I was very happy because I knew that I wouldn't have to face the embarrassment of seeing you in school everyday but right now, I want to know why you suddenly disappeared from school," Jennifer said after taking a quick bite of her cake.
Kola took a sip of from his wine. "My dad said I was getting too stubborn towards him so he decided to send me to a military boarding school at Kano state. Normally any school would feel reluctant about admitting a new student into the final year class but my dad has his way around whatever obstacles that came his way so I was eventually admitted into the school. I didn't stay up to two years there but the experience I had was pure torture. I even cried once when I talked on the phone with my mother."
"I can just imagine your crying face right now," Jennifer said and laughed.
"It wasn't funny then I tell you." Kola shook his head.
"When did you leave Nigeria for London?"
"Just some months after I finished my final examinations in secondary school. Dad wanted me to study a business related course and I didn't really have much of a choice. His biggest dream is to see me take over his empire one day so he had my life planned out already. Although I actually started to develop a liking for the course I was actually forced to do and at the same time I started developing this love for modelling too so I immediately applied for a modelling school after having my certificate in business. You know, I was among the few that had a first class from my set, not like I'm trying to brag though." Kola had his usual mischievous smile on his face as he said the last part.
"That's impressive," Jennifer said.
"How about you Jenny? What happened after secondary school?" Kola's face lit up in excitement.
"I gained admission into the University of Portharcourt to study Linguistic And Communication for four years. I didn't attend any professional modelling school though, I just started signing in for any event that involved modelling in school. Along the way I learnt how to act too." Jennifer took a sip of her wine.
"Why Rivers State?"
"My mom is from Rivers State you know. I never grew up there so I just wanted to have a thirst of my mom's State," Jennifer replied.
"Interesting. Let me get these plates to the kitchen." Kola stood up, picked up his own plate and walked over to where Jennifer was to take hers.
"Let me help you with that." Jennifer stood up and picked up hers.
"No you don't have to." Kola tried to take it from her hands.
"It's nothing Kola, let me just help you." Jennifer bent down to pick up her wine glass but accidentally bumped her forehead into Kola's.
"Jennifer are you alright?" Kola seized her head and inspected it.
"I'm fine Kola, it's nothing serious," Jennifer replied, staring into Kola's eyes.
"Thank God you are," Kola looked at her from her face to her toe and brought his gaze back to her face.
"You're looking so pretty Jennifer, as always," Kola said to Jennifer and leaned closer to her, caging her by placing his two hands on the side of the table on which Jennifer was leaning onto.
"T-Thanks," Jennifer stuttered.
"Do you know what I love the most about you?" Kola trailed his finger along the skin of her exposed hand, making her to shiver at his touch which felt like cold water running down her skin.
Jennifer's eyes followed Kola's finger which was slowly finding its way to her shoulder.
"I love your smile the most." Kola moved his face to the skin of her neck. "It's just so innocent and pure. And then your laughter, I could fall asleep just listening to it." His lips made contact with the skin of Jennifer's neck, making her breathing to hitch.
"You're so beautiful Jenny." Kola's voice was dangerously low and his breath fanned her neck.
Kola stopped talking and Jennifer could feel his lips slowly moving closer to hers, making her heart rate to triple. The air around the both of them suddenly felt so thick and tensed, she could hardly breathe properly. She shut her eyes as she anticipated what she felt was coming next; his kiss.
"Tell me Jennifer, are you being a professional at what you do right now because I can't see any cameras around."
Jennifer's eyes immediately opened in surprise at hearing what Kola had said.
"Do you remember what the bible says about liars? Your face is too pretty for hell Jennifer." Kola chuckled.
"Seriously Kola! Just let me go!" Jennifer tried to push Kola away but he didn't move.
"Say it now Jennifer. You're still attracted to me. You get affected when I have to touch you during shoots don't you?" Kola spoke on.
"I don't know what you're talking about kola."
"You want to pretend now. I'm sorry to let you know but your body just betrayed you Jennifer," Kola stated with a victorious smile on his face.
Kola's attention was suddenly distracted from Jennifer when his phone on the table started to ring.
"Who is calling now?" Kola murmured as he finally released Jennifer from the cage he had formed with his strong arms.
Jennifer felt her heart rate coming down only as Kola took steps away from her as he went to pick up his phone. Kola had played her to prove himself right and she fell right into his trap without even fighting.
"Hello Cynthia... WHY DOES DAD KEEP DOING THAT... I would come tomorrow... Say hi to mom... Bye."
Jennifer watched how Kola's face became clenched by the time he ended his call. He started to pace around the room after the call.
"What is wrong Kola?" Jennifer walked closer to him, concerned about what Cynthia might have told Kola to get him so upset.
"It's my dad. He did the same nonsense he did the last time which made him to faint. I just hope this is not his newest tactic to cajole me into taking over his business because it's a costly one!"
"Did he faint again?" Jennifer asked with a look of concern.
"No but something close to that. I would go and see him at home tomorrow," Kola said and ran his palm through his head.
"I can go with you if you want," Jennifer offered.
"Really?"
"Yes Kola." Jennifer took Kola's hands. "You should calm down. You're looking so tensed."
"Yeah." Kola squeezed her hands lightly.
"Let me go and drop the plates," Kola said and went over to pick up their plates.
Kola met Jennifer holding on to her clutch when he came back from his kitchen.
"Are you leaving now?" he asked.
"Yes. I had a wonderful time with you. You opened up to me, it really made me feel special. Thank you." Jennifer gave a beautiful smile.
Kola walked over to where she was standing and took her hands. "I should be the one thanking you. You were so understanding."
"I need to go so that you can relax. I know that the news you just got is affecting you a lot," Jennifer said and Kola released her hand.
"You're right Jennifer. Goodnight and say hi to Molly," Kola said and Jennifer smiled.
"I will. Goodnight Kola," Jennifer said and with that she walked out of the flat.
