Chapter Thirteen: Explanations

POV: Zero

His blood was...tasty.

Control yourself, you seen how weirded out he was when you cleaned his wound.

But...how else am I gonna satisfy my bloodlust?

Not like I can cut anymore.

That wolf has eyes like a hawk.

I'll figure something out...

I glanced to the carpeted floor, "You really want to know, eh?"

Gadget nodded and sat up like an excited child, waiting for my story like it was a bedtime tale, however this tale didn't have a happy ending.

"Before I became Infinite, I was the leader of the Jackal Squad" I sighed, "A mass criminal gang known for their stealth and intelligence and the ability to get away with even the biggest crimes"

"I do recall hearing about the Jackal Squad before I joined the Resistance" Gadget hummed.

"We were...on a raid of one of Eggman's bases when everything changed from then" I frowned. "We got surrounded by the mass of robots and the Doctor stuck a deal with me, if we worked for him he would give us added protection"

"What did your squad think?" Gadget asked.

"They were unsure about the deal, but I assumed them that the protection would be good in the long run, because of Eggman's mass of robots at his command, we could get away with crimes easier with his protection" I answered. "Oh, how wrong I was..."

I chewed the inside of my cheek, "My squad was on a hunt for Shadow the Hedgehog, as he had broken into Eggmans base in Mystic Jungle, so we tried to stop him"

I felt Gadget's hand on my leg, but I shrugged it off and decided to just say what he wanted to know and get it over with.

"Shadow...murdered my squad" I held back tears threatening to come out. "He murdered them in cold blood, showed no remorse; and when I found him, I was so full of hatred and rage."

"I tried to attack him, but since he has chaos powers he overpowered me just by using teleportation" I muttered. "So I swore to get my revenge and I opted for taking part in Eggman's newest finding, the phantom ruby"

"Using the ruby, I became stronger, I swore to conquer the world and avenge my squad, I succeeded...for a while. After Sonic escaped from the Death Egg, everything came crashing down, my pride, my plans"

"And when you came around and defeated me twice, I started to realise a different side to the world" I glanced at those large amber eyes that showed so much interest and hope.

"I realised that I was too blind to see the hope left in the world - as ruined as it may be" I cleared my throat. "Since the ruby left me, I've decided to try and turn a new leaf..."

Gadget placed his hand over mine and rubbed it softly, "I'm glad that you've decided to do that, I'll be here to help you through it, and I'm sorry about your squad...that was a terrible thing Shadow did"

I huffed, "Nothing can change what he did in the past."

Gadget hummed, "Nobody can change the past, yes, but we can move forward and put them at the peace they deserve, maybe tomorrow I can go with you to pay respects? There's a small chunk of land at the back of these apartments that is used as a graveyard, I can help you create small stones for each of your squad members" he suggested.

He'd... actually do that for me?

Wow...

"I...uh" I stammered, "I don't know what to say..." I chuckled and scratched the back of my neck. "That sounds amazing, Gadget" I smiled at the wolf, his small red tail was wagging in response and thumping against the couch.

"Then come, let's get some rest for tomorrow" he grinned and walked to the room to get some rest, I followed with him but still kept my distance as I didn't want to seem too close to Gadget already just because he suggested to help put my squad at rest, but I slept comfortably in bed this time.
